(21,486 posts)was in the 40s. Forecast today is 50s with rain. Tomorrow's forecast is 65 and rain and high winds again. We had 60 mph gusts last week.
Tornadoes are not common here, but they do happen. In 1985, we were part of a superstorm series of deadly tornadoes that spread through Ohio, PA, NY, and into Ontario, Canada, like the ones that just happened in the Kentucky area. We have had a few smaller ones since then.
Warm spells in winter increase the chances of tornadoes because the atmospheric pressure will change when a cold front returns. That's what is happening in Minnesota now.

(14,061 posts)Winds in Colorado will be up around 100 mph. This storm is one of the worst, apparently.

(14,061 posts)Indiana. Already weve been warned about potential power outages and damage.
One other thing to be aware of with weather like this this time of year are all the Christmas decorations that could become flying projectiles.
This stuff aint right.

(5,134 posts)Thanks, wonderful malaise! And to all other MN dwellers, also stay safe and be prepared. Being ready for inclement weather is the best thing (other than leaving the area) one can do.

(5,134 posts)But, we are okay here. Not even a big limb on the ground. (no complaints.) Now, it is back to normal with Saturday's high around 20F and a low around 4F! Lovely!

(28,866 posts)The killer tornado in Dallas was in April.
There were never any tornadoes in the winter, for sure.
Climate change has made it year round, looks like.

(5,134 posts)All the bad ones were either in late spring or early summer. (The Raleigh tornado in November 1988 was an exception. That thing touched down half a mile behind my house. I was awake when it touched down due to the job I had at the time, and I felt the pressure in my house change at that moment. I knew that something bad had happened. Once the sun came up, I drove down to check out the damage and saw the K-Mart that was on Hwy. 70. It was just a pile of rubble and debris. What a mess that day was.)

(31,392 posts)on April 16, 2011 when my husband and I were at a matinee of the ballet and a tornado came right over our heads in downtown Raleigh! It really did sound like a train. My car was parked in an open lot and fortunately was not damaged. There were trees down everywhere when we finally were given the all clear to leave the theater. The parking attendant told us he hunkered down in between the parked cars because there was no place to go and no time for him to run to shelter!
We had been in the basement numerous times when we lived in Missouri and Nebraska, but never had one hit right where we were.

(146,317 posts)area, frankly. Just some windy weather and maybe a stray thunderstorm or two.

(115,732 posts)that did a lot of damage on the north side and even went through downtown; another in 2009; one in 1986 that made broadcasting history due to live tv footage from a helicopter that chased it; and 2 F-4s in 1965 that killed 13 people. I remember all of them. They usually don't go through the city but the weather is so weird now that I wouldn't rule out anything. Right now it's so foggy I can barely see across the street.

(146,317 posts)I'm just not seeing tornadoes as being likely today in the metro area. The most violent weather will be to the South, it looks like to me.
However, I just canceled a service on our KIA Soul that was scheduled for tomorrow. Roads are likely to be icy in the morning, and our dealership is now a 30 minute drive away on 694, rather than the previous 10 minutes on surface streets. So, that service will just have to wait for better weather.
Today is errand day, and both cars will be out doing those errands. Then, it's into the garage for them until Friday. We tend to plan our outings according to the weather this time of year. Being retired and working at home makes that possible, which is a good thing.
