By KATHY GANNON
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) The Taliban didnt take the Afghan capital they were invited, says the man who issued the invitation.
In an Associated Press interview, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai offered some of the first insights into the secret and sudden departure of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and how he came to invite the Taliban into the city to protect the population so that the country, the city doesnt fall into chaos and the unwanted elements who would probably loot the country, loot shops.
When Ghani left, his security officials also left. Defense minister Bismillah Khan even asked Karzai if he wanted to leave Kabul when Karzai contacted him to know what remnants of the government still remained. It turned out there were none. Not even the Kabul police chief had remained.
Karzai, who was the countrys president for 13 years after the Taliban were first ousted in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, refused to leave.
In a wide-ranging interview at his tree-lined compound in the center of the city where he lives with his wife and young children, Karzai was adamant that Ghanis flight scuttled a last-minute push by himself, the governments chief negotiator Abdullah Abdullah and the Taliban leadership in Doha that would have seen the Taliban enter the capital as part of a negotiated agreement.

No surprise.
Corrupt POS and cronies funneled billions of U.S. taxpayer money to the Taliban during the war

(1,364 posts)When the Taliban were in power, they banned Poppy fields and reduced production by 75%. We invaded in 2001 and, 20 years later, Afghanistan produces 90+/- of the opiates. Also note, in the past 20 years, opiate addiction in America skyrocketed.
We went to war with Afghanistan to protect drug company products...not to avenge the 9/11 attacks. Furthermore, now that the Taliban have control, they are again going to ban the Poppy fields. Thank you, Joe Biden, now we may be able to curb drug addiction in American.
As far as the treatment of women in Afghanistan, our government couldn't care a less about those girls, until of course Joe Biden pulled out, then all of a sudden everyone was up in arms over the girls. By the way, girls are sold to the highest bidder or prostituted for drugs every day of every hour in the US.
This is my opinion.
