The latest news from South Africa

OK
I'm so obsessed I check out the SA NICD twitter feed at 2 pm every day. If you believe the stats, cases may be increasing but definitely not doubling every 3 days after doing that for a while. Gauteng province may have peaked. Positivity rate is concerning.

The mavens really don't know what's going on with Omicron.. Best to wait until the end of the year. I will be the first to panic when the time comes.

I've had several friends test positive, but none of whom were boosted (because most adults couldn't be until the last 48 hours). All mild. And where I am (in Essex) people seem to be masking up.
I'm boosted and I had COVID in late July (likely Delta). I'm not particularly concerned for myself, but my friends in the NHS are just exhausted.

I guess we'll see what the next days and weeks bring. Interestingly, I feel like messaging about COVID is way better here than in the US.

about testing positive or even getting a bit sick. We didn't spend billions of dollars and accomplished one of the true miracles in medical history to avoid a case of the sniffles. We need to only worry about hospitalizations and death.

I’ve had three relatives die since this began, none of Covid. They spent their last year in lockdown.
Both my parents, in their 60s, refuse to do this. They’re boosted and wear masks. But they’ve decided to live life, come what May. I support them 100%.
Life is short. Be as responsible as humanly possibly while still trying to enjoy this precarious life.
