FDA Lifts Key Restriction on Abortion Pill

“The Biden administration Thursday ended a long-standing restriction on a medication used to terminate early-stage pregnancies, even as politicians across the United States intensified efforts that represent the most serious challenge to abortion rights in decades,” the Washington Post reports.

“The elimination of the regulation, which had been temporarily suspended, means abortion pills can be prescribed through telehealth consultations and mailed to patients. But in large swaths of the nation, strict state rules will dampen the impact. Several states ban sending the drug by mail and impose other restrictions on use of the pill.”

For instance, couldn’t California state that it is not a crime for a physician to facilitate a telemedicine abortion anywhere in the US? If they did that, who would prosecute the physician?

abortion pills to someone in Alabama, where it is the law that the prescribing provider has to be in the same room as the patient.

There are already a lot of workarounds in place -- people in other countries who are willing to consult with people and mail them the pills themselves. These aren't perfect or risk-free, and they're certainly not available to everyone who wants an abortion, but it is a helpful option. You can learn more at www.ShareAbortionPill.info

13. Doctors in California have the "right to refuse"

They have the right and responsibility to assure that the patient in Texas will be treated properly by physicians in Texas if there are complications with a procedure.

One often does not realize that providers can "deny service for any reason"....

I've been dumped by doctors. One doctor dumped me when I was pregnant. Said I was "high risk"...(She was my family doc and didn't want to prescribe me meds when I was pregnant so she dumped me via certified mail)
