The complex problem of money in democracy is nowhere starker than in the Maryland referendum on casino gambling.

The airwaves are full of ads against the horrors of casino gambling... paid for by casinos. Casinos in nearby states that would lose Maryland business if Maryland had casino gambling.

We have a West Virginia casino that was chartered to provide money for education in West Virginia spending $25 million running ads in Maryland about how when a state charters a casino to provide money for education the money doesn't go to education at all. The evil casino just gobbles it all up. And casino gambling always a big rip-off of taxpayers to line casino operators' pockets.

I guess they are in a position to know.
