I just tried to read about Melania and her "non fungible tokens"

I read the definition in several places. I have graduated from college...twice. I consider myself fairly intelligent.

I have no idea what this crap is, but I do believe it is crap purchased with imaginary money. I do not want to live long enough ( I am 72) to have to actually learn and pay attention to this crap. I really cannot come up with a better word than crap. Sorry, I realize that does not sound very well educated.

It's value is up 326% since I purchased it back in August.

Modern currency, used as money, is fungible, ie. mutually interchangeable, one unit is equal in exchange value to another unit of the same declared value. One US 10 dollar bill is equal in stated exchange value to another US 10 dollar bill, as long as both are legal tender.

NFT stands for non-fungible token. Each one is unique. There is no set exchange value. They are not fungible. It is like owning an original painting, but they are not physical, they are non-material.

Thursday’s announcement was met with some skepticism. Richard Hine, a novelist, commented on Twitter: “I’m not saying most #NFTs are scams operated by grifters and money launderers. I’m just saying Melania Trump is launching an #NFT.”

Hey, it only costs $150 and includes an audio recording of a message of hope from Melania.

but the original would still sell for millions at auction. People buy "real" diamonds and then keep them in the safe while they wear fakes.

An NFT is a digital verification that one owns the original. The technology is new but the concept really isn't.

It isn't something that I would spend money on, but I also don't buy diamonds or designer clothes. Crap has value if people are willing to pay for it, even if they could get essentially the same thing for much less.
