General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhat is going on with Mitch McConnell?
He seems to be singing a different tune in the last couple of days?
He said the events of January 6th were "horrendous". Why has he suddenly seen the light?
He said he was very interested in what was going on in the House investigation. Very strange comments coming from the guy that wants to be the next Majority Leader of the Senate.
Did he just get tired of being attacked by Donald Trump and decide to fight back?
Or is he hearing inside information from Republican voters that are not happy with the direction his Party is going?
Is he trying to move his Party to the center before the next election?
One thing we have learned about Mitch McConnell. He does nothing that is not in the interest of Mitch McConnell.

(43,303 posts)Pivot for the midterms. I bet he knows the ID of the DNC/RNC bomber.. He's convinced the worst of the Democratic storm is over, and the Senate will emerge intact. And he sees TFG failing. The ascent is over, time to consolidate. In his own 'mumbles' way, he reads political tea leaves almost as well as Speaker Pelosi.

(43,303 posts)MoscowMitch prob thinks the downside is past, and he'll be back in power in a little over 12 months. No lost SP Court seats if his luck holds. Perhaps he's even happy infrastructure will get done so he doesn't have to deal with it. And BBB is tied up. The Jan6Comm will lance the boil and it will be cleaned up about as well as the S&L Crisis with no more litigation than Bernie Madoff's Ponzi. TFG will be in court a few times. So yeah, I'd say MM is pretty happy.

(7,434 posts)IMO, Moscow Mitch sees a crack in the MAGA hold on GOP power and he's pulling that crack open. Trump is a political rival who aspires to be a dictator. Letting Trump hang around the scene means that Mitch's power gets significantly DIMINISHED. McConnell has waited patiently for his time to attack Trump. As the J6 Commission moves forward with damning revelations, Mitch is listening closely and knows that Trump and his allies are increasingly vulnerable. Now is the time to lean into the Committee's work and take advantage of Trump's weak spots. McConnell wants Trump to be gone-- not because Trump is a danger to the nation, but because Trump is a continuing threat to McConnell's hold on power.

something incriminating enough, and he's attempting to distance himself to the extent he's able to finagle his way around that said speculative theory of incrimination.
I have absolutely nothing to "back up" that speculative theory, just basing on his evil character, not withstanding his obvious and long standing contempt for tfg,

(1,896 posts)communication from a democrat to anyone in the previous administration to be examined. Using a "both sides were trying to influence the WH since the election" strategy is something the media cannot resist. They will put more effort into looking at why Democrats let this go on than they will on further exposing the extent of Republican corruption. MM would rather derail any progress and make it seem that Democrats are equally, if not fully responsible for the entire fiasco.

(1,896 posts)to the WH, for example a democratic congressperson asking the WH to call off the march on the Capitol will be spun as the Democrats knew what was going on and did nothing - an act of tacit approval by democratic leaders. We cannot rule out that we had inside sources of information whose identity must remain unknown; it is not beyond his character to put them under a public microscope knowing they too will be cast in a bad light and appear to be less than truthful.

(4,869 posts)Support for the formation of a committee would lose the GOP Trump supporters, so he wouldnt agree to it. He knew, as did everyone, that Pelosi would pursue this, because, you know, she has a spine and a conscience. The GOP relies on the Dems to do the right thing. Nothing new here.
If the Committee found nothing, he would just call it a partisan witch hunt. If they found something, as is the case, he can retrospectively support their effort, thinking the rest of us didnt notice his amorality. Its Mitchism.

(11,371 posts)has always thought that Jan 6 was dangerous and deplorable (and most likely damaging to the brand) - while still being what he has always been, that being the preeminent obstructionist for Every. Single. Thing. that a Democrat advocates or puts forward. Same leopard, same spots.
