this crap will continue, get out the vote or get used to it.

(10,624 posts)We just need 50 reliable votes. We are (at least) two short of that number.

(146,324 posts)Let's do that, and end this nonsense.

(146,324 posts)We need at least 60 votes in the Senate. That would solve everything. Until then, we can be held up by any Democratic Senator.
MineralMan
(146,324 posts)Someone will be along shortly to tell you that is not so, however.

(7,509 posts)The same people were saying "if only we had a couple or five votes to get around Joe Lieberman."
The argument was insanely stupid and demoralizing then, and it's insanely stupid and demoralizing now.

(424 posts)Some of us remember 2008 and the rat fucking done to keep Franken from being seated.
The system is broken, pushing for a Super Majority allows many Dems to point fingers back at youth vote for being the issue.
So the magic number of 60 is like believing in Santa Clause.
The number isn't 60, because it will always allow those to defend Senators from "red states" of doing what is needed to get reelected.
Add five or ten more, more excuses.

I wonder what "regrets" we will have when we look back upon this moment a decade later.

(43,479 posts)highly unlikely to happen
there are more than just Manchin and Sinema and Feinstein who are against doing away with the filibuster overall
I would say a total of 11 or so atm
so unless we primary them out AND win the general (massively hard in many cases) we likely will NOT get to 50 who will vote to bin the filibuster, as the red held seats that we can actually win (and win with anti filibuster candidates) are not that many
I will drill down
anti bin the filibuster (entirely) Dems atm
Manchin
Sinema
Feinstein
Tester
Carper
Hickenlooper
Angus King
Coons
Warner
Shaheen
Hassan
if all of those refuse, that puts us at 39 who will bin it
now lets start adding new ones who WILL bin it
Feinstein's replacement (even if she insanely tries to run again, she will lose the promary, she is well past her expiry date, and CA will not vote for a Senator who will be 98 at the end of her next terms)
Sinema is going down in the 2024 primary, likely to Gallego
the rest of the 9 left are either untouchable in a primary or if they ca be defeated, that pro nuke the filibuster candidate cannot win the state
so we are now at 41 binners
we need NINE new pickups, 10 of we lose POTUS
I will list every remote possibility (over the next few elections)and some of these are big big reaches, and some are not for years from now
NC
NC
PA
WI
FL
FL
OH
ME (Collins)
TX (Cruz)
KY (if Moscow Mitch retires)
TN (Blackburn, and the ONLY Dem who can win there is Tim McGraw, who was TWICE now turned down open seat races)
there is 11, but the best I can see out of that is winning 6
and do not lose any incumbents who support binning it
and
we also need to hold POTUS
or you can add ANOTHER one needed (so we have 51)
and I cannot find another new state where we can pick up a seat, SO one of the 9 remaining blockers would have to flip to bin
if we win 6 new binners and lose no incumbent binners
we are at 47 binners (provided, like I said, we gain AZ and Ca as two new binners)
we need to flip three of the 9 'no bins' left, 4 if we lose POTUS
these are the most realistic to get to change to bin
