There's a story today from Corvallis, Oregon about a 55 year old man who was in the ICU with Covid saved by this filter used in a dialysis machine. Does anyone here have any direct knowledge of or experience with this treatment?

Not for someone with a mild form of the disease.

Without even reading the article, my hunch this filter is not restricted to Covid

It's for people who have had serious complications from Covid. One of the serious complications is massive organ failure, which often is fatal. Kidney failure is part of this.
