Shepards, I can never read their emotions. It's the only dog that intimidates me.
Major just strikes me as protective. He's an old dog that can't learn a new trick and I'm glad he will be well taken care rather than "put down." Two words I despise.

I think maybe a younger dog could adapt but Major seems set in his ways.....he will be happier now, and hopefully Joe and Jill can still see Major sometimes, it is hard to have to give up a pet.

He might have been fine in the Biden's home, but got a bit triggered in the WH.

Shepherds are very trainable dogs, but we don't know what happened to him before he was rescued.

I know they're guard dogs and everything, but they are also service and working dogs etc.

One died several years ago. Although intimidating to look at, once I knew her I realized she was a very nice dog. She always wanted to go up to people to greet them in a well mannered way. The Presa she has now is a young male who does have some behavior issues. He was a rescue so he may not have had the best start. He scares me. LOL

made of that? Especially since you despise those two words?

And I will point out, again, Major is not an old dog. His brother Champ was the older dog.

My reading skills are just fine.

The local shelter, aka pound...

The shepherds and border collies are the best behaved breed...
They're the most intelligent.

The place is mostly strays.
It's mostly large dogs, mixed breeds.
Pit bulls, mastiffs type, boxers, retriever mixes etc.
The shepherds, pinschers and occasionally border collies will sit and make good eye contact. The others jump all over the place and are hyper. These dogs on videos are all on the "last chance" list and are at risk for being put down. Rescues will usually pick up the german shepherds and many of the herding dog mixes.

I saw a twitter feed where they were explaining that they see Major on weekends and he lives with Cousin Charlie. They got some deserved negativity (IMHO) over this situation, and they are now explaining. They should have explained further about Major to begin with.

There are many, many, many of US who are adamant Democrats who rescue and spend hard earned money and time trying to save dogs and cats and other animals that others throw out into the cold. It should be expected that those of us who do that would be concerned about Major.

It would be better if Commander had come from a rescue. Since that hasn't been fully explained (i.e., he was a gift from Biden's brother), then I am sure he came from a breeder.

In my opinion (always have to explain that to keep from getting pummeled), breeders are a great part of what is wrong with the animal situation in this country. There are way too many dogs and cats who need homes and breeders only add to the number and take the space where another might be adopted. If someone is looking for a particular breed, age, sex, etc., there are many breed specific rescues - in business because so many people who buy from a breeder eventually give up and send their purebred to the pound.

Adopt! Don't shop!
