Once upon a time in West Virginia...

Ken Hechler was a Democratic congressman for many years. He was also a professor at Marshall University, an activist for Civil Rights, the environment, and other progressive causes, a veteran, and the author of The Bridge at Remagen, which was later made into a Hollywood movie.

when Sen. Byrd died in office. Hechler was extremely old at that point, somewhere in his 90s. (Although I live in TN, I am a 7th generation West Virginian and grew up there).
