Nation's oldest LGBTQ+ newspaper gets seat in WH briefing room

The nation’s oldest LGBTQ+ newspaper has been assigned a designated seat in the White House press briefing room, a first for LGBTQ+ outlets. The Washington Blade said Monday the White House Correspondents Association (WHCA), the organization responsible for seat assignments, announced the move late last week as part of a new seating arrangement set to take effect Jan. 3.

The outlet will reportedly share the spot with The Boston Globe, and rotate on a weekly basis, and the Blade’s White House reporter Chris Johnson will fill the seat.

WHCA’s Steven Portnoy reportedly said in a memo the updated seating arrangements are intended “to enhance diversity in the briefing room,” adding that the new chart features “organizations that target Black, Hispanic and LGBTQ audience” along with publications across ideologies.

“Thank you to the Correspondents Association for this designation,” Blade editor Kevin Naff said. “This was decades in the making and a credit to the hard work of Chris Johnson and Lou Chibbaro Jr. before him. This will enable us to devote more focus to national political news impacting the LGBTQ community.”
