"SNIP......
Cook Political Report: On Monday, Californias citizens redistricting commission voted 14-0 to approve a map thats a dream for Democrats. Technically, the commission (five Democrats, five Republicans and four others) was prohibited from taking partisan or incumbent data into consideration.
But the end product features strong districts for Californias 42 Democratic incumbents (save for two who are retiring) and makes five out of 11 GOP incumbents more vulnerable.

(1,654 posts)I'm guessing this is a fair map, in that it was approved unanimously by a bipartisan commission. If only the rest of the country did the same. It wouldn't always come out in our favor, but it would be fair to voters.
As it stands, with all the gerrymandering done nationally, mostly in R states but some in D states, there will be very few competitive districts left.

(15,979 posts)Very few will be the opposite color in all 50 states. Thats definitely the direction were going.

(424 posts)Ruies in place restrict drawing crazy lines. It works really good. Makes it harder to dilute areas. For example, prior to these ruies the San Gabriel Valley was carved up. Had Santa Barbara County reaching down. Two very diverse populations.

(6,401 posts)And those that remain, often look for ways to move away to a red state. Yes, California is exporting its knuckle draggers.
Odd thing is, a Republican can win here in certain districts and state offices. But they have to be moderates and not extreme right, plus be willing to work with Democrats. But the GOP is not willing to go down that road, my guess is, if they do that here and its successful, they will be forced to do it everywhere else. And the hard right knows that they will then get pushed out.

(484 posts)Im still in the old 39th district for now. And Im now in the minority, barely, (Im of European descent) but still...thats cool! My district is now an Asian plurality, by just over 1% and no one has more than 50%. The shape is a bit distorted compared to the more compact 39th but Im pretty sure they did it to carve out a Latino actual majority district right next to us. Whats great about having an independent bi-partisan (4 from each party) + non-political (four regular citizens) member commission that redistricts every 10 years is that theres much less suspicion of political shenanigans behind the scenes.
Itll be interesting to see how this plays out. Ive been getting notices from a potential Dem candidate, Jay Chen. Now that I know he may run in my new district in 2022, Ill pay more attention to him. Our current House rep is a bog standard cut corporate taxes, dont spend on the people, gun rights trump peoples lives, deregulate, who needs voting rights? Republican named Young Kim. She squeaked out a win against a good Dem, Gil Cisneros, in 2020, ugh.
Were a pretty purple area, but that is a huge positive change from the deep red we were for decades before the early 2000s.

(424 posts)At least currently. Did they extend 45 north a bit?

(484 posts)That would be fan-f&%king-tastic!!!!!!!!!!!! One of my favorite Congress critters.
I was whining to my hub last year that I was so jealous of the South County cities who had her for a rep. The new 45th might swing south far enough. [googles frantically] YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!
Its twue, its twue! (Im running out of exclamation points.)
HAPPY DANCE TIME.

(424 posts)Took me until I was mid 50's to get a Dem as a Rep, then I got her. Welcome to the Katie club.

(484 posts)Yes, the 45th looks like it starts in the south in Fountain Valley, curls west and north around Santa Ana and Anaheim, puts out a lobe to pick up the Vietnamese community in Garden Grove, keeps going north to include some of Cerritos, then curls east to pick up the north half of Fullerton (thats me) and up into Brea. It may catch a bit of Yorba Linda, too.
Heres the best map I could find of it. I sincerely hope you havent been cut out of the Katie Club!

Edited to add "Oh, sh$t! Katies NOT running in the new 45th, shes running in the new coastal district, didnt check the number! Now Im sad for me but probably means youre safe (if she can win.) Guess Im back to Jay Chen, who looks good on paper.

(4,104 posts)I dread whats coming down the pike in 2022. With the 6 to 3 right wing majority on the Supreme Court and voter suppression, the lunatic fringe have tasted blood in the water, and they aint gonna quit.
