It was the bread and butter for Rush Limbaugh, and others of his ilk.

Coincidentally, the first time that I ever heard Limbaugh on the radio was back in the 80's when I was working at a true hellhole. And many of my coworkers there were justifiably ANGRY a lot, and many of them were clearly identifying with the anger projected by Limbaugh too. I'm not sure if any of those coworkers even had political beliefs of any kind, but they probably did later... after the actual words from Limbaugh eventually trickled into their minds.
