At the grocery store, the hardware store and the gift shop almost everyone was masked; the liquor store not so much. The women there all had masks on but maybe half of the men didn't. I didn't see a single maskless person at the very busy grocery store, one at the hardware store and one at the crowded gift shop. So that gave me some hope for everyone except some liquor-buying men.

some bottles of liquor. They didn't have masks on. The liquor store owner posted the security video on our local Facebook group and the couple was identified and reported to the police in like 5 minutes! It was like an episode of America's Dumbest Criminals!

... and stretches out over time (peak gets smeared, rounded).

Wave two before: cases peaked Jan 8, deaths peaked Jan 21.

Almost half were unmasked. Aldi, Whole Foods, almost 100% masked. I’ll let you guess the demographics of the massless.

I think employees at a building supply were supposed to be, but some wore them below their nose, and the cashier's was below his chin.

We’re more or less plateaued. No deaths from Omicron. Hospitals a bit challenged but not dire.

Is this trustworthy?

Almost 4k deaths on 12/19.

On the other hand, zero on 12/20, 190-something on 12/19.

That's not how a large number of people in their last days of life die. What you're seeing are the people who died a few days ago being counted later in the week. It's a bureaucratic artefact, not representative of reality.

That's why you smooth the curve. Click on and only pay attention to the 7-day average, and even then take the last few days' data with a grain of salt, +/- 10%, because it will change over the next few days as those data get averaged in. I trust the data that are more than 7 days old, but only when averaged.
