But the maxims work together. As the one relates to the deficiencies of intellect which marks his followers, the other relates to the profound dishonesty with which they assess their place in the world. He gives them a cheap validation of all that is in fact their abject moral failure as human beings and citizens, which costs him nothing to do, and in exchange they shower him with praise, in his favorite form of money as well as mere adulation. It's a cheat, but one they're happy to succumb to.
