Why you should upgrade your mask as the Omicron variant spreads

Why experts recommend a N95 mask to stop Covid spread
(CNN)As the highly contagious Omicron coronavirus variant continues to spread, some experts say it's past time to reconsider your face mask options -- especially if you're still wearing the cloth variety.
"Cloth masks are little more than facial decorations. There's no place for them in light of Omicron," ...........................
"This is what scientists and public health officials have been saying for months, many months, in fact," Wen added in a separate phone interview.
Omicron is now the dominant strain of coronavirus in the US, according to the CDC
"We need to be wearing at least a three-ply surgical mask," she said, which is also known as a disposable mask and can be found at most drugstores and some grocery and retail stores. "You can wear a cloth mask on top of that, but do not just wear a cloth mask alone."
Ideally, in crowded places, "you should be wearing a KN95 or N95 mask," which can be as inexpensive as a few dollars each, Wen added. By having a better fit and certain materials -- such as polypropylene fibers -- acting as both mechanical and electrostatic barriers, these masks better prevent tiny particles from getting into your nose or mouth and must be fitted to your face to function properly.
Changing guidance[/b
During the first several months of the pandemic, health experts discouraged the general public from buying N95 masks, since medical professionals were facing a shortage of personal protection equipment. But it has "been many months since supply of N95s (has been) an issue," Wen said.
Yet the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's most recent guidance on selecting, properly wearing, cleaning and storing face masks recommended people avoid N95 masks and instead choose masks with two or more layers of washable, breathable fabric -- which Wen called "a major mistake."
................................................
lets and the smaller aerosols or particles potentially laden with airborne virus if infected people are present, Bromage said. A cloth face covering also has 75% inward and outward leakage, which the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists defines as the "percentage of particles entering the facepiece" and the "percentage of particles exhaled by a source exiting the facepiece," respectively.

This is an awful message to send, given the bleatings, for many months, of the anti-mask brigade.
I think there's a way to encouraging some folks to consider upgrading their protection without resorting to calling cloth masks useless. (Which, BTW, I find suspiciously alarmist given the actual physics of filtration.)

They have always been useless. Those vented masks and the neoprene masks are horrible. Vented only protects the person wearing it, the neoprene actually helps the virus spread by breaking up large droplets into smaller ones that float around longer.

(45,528 posts)I use big filters that cover my nose and mouth well so the mask is essentially a holder for it. Headband gives me a great fit and protection.
Fit is very important. A badly fitting mask of any type is going to have air leaking from the sides instead of being filtered.

(33,198 posts)Luckily, I have a canary SO who has been well ahead of the curve throughout.
She started wearing a 'Niner-five back in September and even more concerning has adopted gloves in public places where large amounts of the handling of objects is required like a grocery.
So, her instinct is to move to MOPP Level IV.

(21,151 posts)"Considering the Omicron variant's infectiousness coupled with the greater availability of better masks, it's a good idea to upgrade" would have been a much better way to phrase that. Even a cloth mask reduces the distances the virus travels on exhale. To call them facial decorations is contrary to what we've learned in the last couple of years.

with the outside 2 layers being 100% cotton tight weave fabric and the inner 3rd layer being pillow protector material. That inner layer is breathable facing in and waterproof facing out. Hold them up to the light and no light gets through. They're not "little more than facial decorations." They lay flat against and cover the face from ear to ear and snug under the chin. No gaps! A nose piece and the type of pattern I use prevents them from slipping down. They've proven their effectiveness and, as an added plus, they're comfortable to wear for extended periods (I've worn mine up to 17 hours in a row). When I have doctor appointments and have to switch to those paper masks...ugh! I can understand why anti-maskers complain.

Wounded Bear
(58,706 posts)as a qualifier I don't go out much, and when I do it tends to be brief periods in stores, etc. Between uses, I hang them up to dry out. If I have an extended wear, that will cut down the times I re-use it. Generally, on days when I visit the hospital and expect to be there for several hours, I'll grab a brand new one.
My box of 50 has lasted a couple of months so far with that method.
Which reminds me, time to check my inventory.

Many people don't wear a good quality mask.
It's past time to upgrade and stock up on filters.

(7,412 posts)They fit loose on most people and can have large gaps on the sides and around the nose allowing air to go in and out around the mask, not through it.
Its accepted that these masks are not meant to filter out the airborne virus, they are meant to only stop large droplets or spray from either leaving the wearer or directly entering the wearers mouth or nose.

(4,758 posts)The lifespan of a P100 filter is less than an N95 (finer filter, clogs easier) - the design of a respirator makes it safe to reuse until the filters are so clogged it's hard to breathe, you aren't going to get sick from a dirty mask - but at $6 a set I don't use.mine unless it's a legitimate Hot Zone!

Silver Gaia
(4,546 posts)to make sure the mask fits tightly under your chin and carefully smooth the metal band at the top to conform to the shape of your nose bridge and cheeks. I always flatten the "v" crimp in the metal band before I put it on because its easier to get it to fit tightly without that sharp bend. If you wear glasses, they should not steam up if you've fit it correctly. If they do, reposition it until they don't steam up. Hope that helps!

(4,546 posts)Powecom is the most recommended brand for KN95 masks. They are not that expensive (usually less than $1 each), and this merchant accepts PayPal. I've ordered from them many times (in fact, just received an order today). They are the real deal.
My hubby is a cancer patient. We use these masks almost exclusively, and have for over a year now. I have some authentic 3M N95 masks as well, but we've found the KN95s to be more comfy, so we use them in most settings.
It's OK to wear a cloth or surgical mask OVER a KN95 or N95, but never under them. It breaks the seal. And always fit the metal band at the top closely to your nose and cheeks to create a good seal. If you wear glasses, they should not steam up if you have a good seal.
I agree with warnings about fake masks being sold on Amazon. In general, I distrust third-party sellers for anything name-brand and/or important. Buy directly from the manufacturer or from a trusted merchant. On Amazon, if it says it is shipped and sold by Amazon, I trust that, but not a third-party seller even if it is shipped by Amazon.
Hope that helps someone!

The ones I really like right now are the KF94. They are the Korean equivalent to the KN95, except the filtration is at 94%. Very comfortable and good coverage. They look nicer, too, IMO.
I also ordered 3M N95 in the Aura style (similar to the look and folded like the KF94). For comfort, I like this 3M N95 aura mask better tha the usual 3M N95 masks...

(9,260 posts)have the bands that go around the back of the head. Also (and this is just me personally) I don't like white masks. The Aura is only in white, AFAIK. The KF94's are available in black and I prefer that. The masks I ordered were individually packaged and had dates stamped on them.

What's the Difference Between KN95 and KF94 Masks?
How to Tell if Your Mask is Counterfeit
A lot of good info in this second article above about the history of the KF94 (hint: SARS, MERS), how to shop for KF94's, and avoiding counterfeit KF94 masks.
Also both articles show a few KF94 brands that they trust.
I ordered my masks from eBay. You want to be sure they are marked KF94 on the package and have the red, white and blue seal of the Korean government. If it's in English, look for certified by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, South Korea (similar to image below). Korea does rigorous testing and oversees the production and distribution of KF94 masks. It's pretty well controlled there. The fake masks are largely from China.
This is just what I've learned in the last 10 days or so... I'm not vouching for any particular mask or company!

(17,956 posts)They're not "completely useless", just not nearly as effective.
Years ago, I was doing some drywall work at the house and needed some masks. Only thing they had at the big box was a monster pack of N95's. I was a bit irritated because I didn't need that many damn masks, but also didn't want to make a special trip to find a onesy, twosy pack so I bought them. Who knows? Might need them someday. Yep. Been using them since the pandemic began.

(10,156 posts)A bandana over the nose and mouth? A neck gaiter made of knit material? A single-layer with loosely-woven material? Multiple layers of close-woven fabric with a non-woven insert? I find the masks I make (multiple-layer close-woven fabric) both better fitting and more effective than those cheap blue ones that gap at all the edges (My cloth ones fit tightly around the cheeks and chin, and have adjustable nose pieces so my glasses (usually) don't fog up).
And they're washable, so we're not cluttering up landfills (and the neighborhoods) with discarded one-use masks.

(34,087 posts)While it is absolutely correct that more protection is needed than cloth face masks (even well-fitted, multi-layer ones), it is false that they are little more than face decorations.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7497125/
(While the article is generally negative as to cloth masks, largely becasue of the wide variety of fabric and fit, it confirms what I've been saying all along - well-fitted multiple layers of close weave fabric are at least 70% effective.
(I have switched, for the duration of omicron to KN94 masks, but once it has passed - barring a new variant that is as efficient at transmission - I wll return to my well-fitted, close-weave cotton masks.
