Several months ago, Malcolm Nance was on Michael Cohen's "Mea Culpa" podcast. He described what life was like in Afghanistan for journalists. He says, that a number of wealthy people opened up their luxurious compounds to the various journalists. The reporters very often had loads of time to kill, so their hosts held frequent, lavish parties to pass the time. Those good times have ended. I heard this podcast not long after the pull-out. Before that, I had always wondered why Engel, Martha Raddatz, and other were so bent out of shape over the war's end. Now, I know. All the hand-wringing about the Afghan people was just cover for the real source of their ire.

How much money has the USA saved? (Hint, billions)

How many has American society collapsed since the withdrawal? (Hint, it hasn't, at least not because of Afghanistan!)

How many Taliban or al Qaeda terrorist attacks on the USA since the withdrawal? (Hint: zero)

How many troops spent Christmas with their families instead of basically being peacekeepers in a war accomplishing nothing anymore? (Hint: all of them)

He obviously has made many friends and contacts throughout the years and is sympathetic to their plight. To the point that he looks at it as a betrayal.

I remember discussing Afghanistan on this board 20 years ago and there was a consensus that this attempt to graft our AMericanized system of socio-economic-political values would be fruitless.
