Don't give up, never give up. She didn't.

Stick with me and read the whole thing.

I post about gun violence. It's what I do and what I've done since December 14, 2012 when I saw the Sandy Hook tragedy unfold with my granddaughter in my lap. That changes a man.

Look at my Journal here if you don't know me: https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=journals&uid=163395

In every thread I start someone comments that nothing ever changes. Nothing can be done. It's just the fucked up way America is.

I'm here to tell you that's not true!

Up until 1970 the NRA was a gun safety and sporting organization. It actually promoted limiting the unrestricted access to guns. Then the gun industry pulled a coup and took over the organization and implemented a no-compromise no-restriction guns-everywhere policy.

For the next 30 years they had free reign as they operated under the radar, buying influence and politicians promoting more access to guns and more lethal guns. As a result by the 1990s America reached its highest rate of gun violence killing more than 10 in every 100 thousand Americans. Then Sandy Hook happened and the NRA used it to promote MORE guns!

We all lament that no change happened right away. It takes time to overcome a 30 year head start but it's happening.

From 1974 until 1980 there was only Handgun Control Inc later to become https://www.bradyunited.org. Gunners had the NRA, GOA, the entire gun industry and the likes of militias who promoted a bastardization of the 2nd Amendment.

Sandy Hook changed that. Now there is the Sandy Hook Promise, Everytown for Gun Safety, Moms Demand Action, Giffords (https://giffords.org/lawcenter/gun-laws), Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Newtown Action Alliance, States United to Prevent Gun Violence, March for Our Lives and Stop Handgun Violence. WE ARE NO LONGER ALONE.

We, the responsible people, the ones who don't seek profit at the cost of lives are now following the path the Gun Culture has laid out for us. We are organizing, we are donating to campaigns, we are selecting candidates and getting them elected and like the Gun Lobby we are still under the radar. The media is FINALLY reporting on gun violence and it's because WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

Don't give up, never give up. Now is the time to become part of the solution and stop being passive. Stand up and take part. Do a simple search on “gun control organizations” and choose one to support.

With apologies to Smokey the Bear, “Only you can prevent gun violence.”
