It was around the time that conservatives were in a panic that Dr. Seusshe of green eggs, two fish (both red and blue), and behatted feline famewas being canceled that everyone seemed to lose the plot.
This, of course, is Dr. Seuss. The plot was always whimsical at best. And this is cancel culture, two of the most feared, bastardized, and, in turn, meaningless words society wields today: like a weapon, if the weapon was a sword constructed of boiled spaghetti noodles. In that case, the plot was never there to begin with.
The phrase cancel culture has been used as a false flag by anyone who feels threatened by the idea of accountability. Its a desperate shield used amidst a panic attack that changing norms, values, and, finally, the validation of marginalized voices might diminish a person of their cherished power: the ability to say and do anything without repercussions or the need to change and evolve.
The fallacy of cancel culture is that, in an age when social media mobs arrive with their megaphones any time a public figure trips a PC landmine, reactionary progressives and the unforgiving horde can cause these people to lose their jobs and all future opportunities. Say one wrong thing, and Twitter will ensure you never work again. Your life is ruined. You are canceled.

(11,742 posts)Cancelling is typically something that happens to smaller, YouTube, Instagram, Twitch, and TicToc type celebrities who make a misstep, etc... take Lindsay Ellis for example, who recently said she was leaving YouTube and Social Media in general after incessant harassment after making comments about Raya and it being taken as culturally insensitive. Natalie Wynn of Contrapoints fame has also experienced cancelling by some in the LGBTQ community for collaborating with Buck Angel (who people call "truscum" for statements about other trans people). Angel did a 10 second voice over on one of Wynn's video essays impersonating John Waters, prompting Twitter and other SM sites to erupt with calls to shut Wynn down.
Cancel Culture, has been utilized by more powerful people in the same vein as "PC" and "Liberal Media" to deflect criticism and accountability. For example, when allegations that Louis C.K. was harassing women comics and forcing them to watch him masturbate or threatening their future in comedy and people spoke up about it, it was said that he was being "cancelled". He certainly lost a lot of gigs and his T.V. show, but he is still out there. Chappelle being criticized for his segment on Trans people during his recent Netflix special, is being called "Cancel Culture". People like Jerry Seinfeld saying that he doesn't play college campuses anymore because people take offense to his jokes... Cancel culture run amok.
There are differences and nuance, but people on the right and people who stand to lose power and money, often hate nuance. They like the water muddy so that they can continue to operate as if in the period before you actually had to care about whether your words and views were offensive to a chunk of society. "Remember the good ole days when you could make a "wetback" joke without immigrants rights groups telling you you were being offensive?" "It is sad that you can't even tell a good fried chicken and watermelon joke without the NAACP getting all up in arms". That is typically the difference between "cancelling" and Cancel Culture.
