https://www.mlive.com/public-interest/2021/12/with-legislative-and-congressional-maps-complete-michigans-redistricting-process-enters-new-phase.htmlThis was gerrymandered 9-5 for Reps, Dems eked out a couple wins to make it 7-7 in 2020, but the new districts could have easily been rigged 9-4 for Republicans. Michigan lost a seat so it will likely be 7-6 going forward either way.
And the state Senate districts are a massive swing to Dems, it was gerrymandered to hell in favor of Reps and Dems now have a realistic shot at holding the state Senate.
While this wont be a swing in Dems favor from 7-7 we have now, this is defense and prevented Reps from stealing seats going forward. These non partisan commissions are really stopping gerrymandering cold in dozens of states. Experts are saying redistributing is either a wash or night even favor Dems a seat or two nationally. But control of these state governments is now more fair and thats a must for the people to preserve our democracy.
Great news for Michigan!

(11,950 posts)1. Some Dems are threatening to sue
"The new districts at both Congressional and state legislative levels pit incumbents against each other, realign traditional political boundaries and make changes some Michiganders have long asked for, including making a Lansing-centric Congressional district and uniting the city of Flint into the same political districts.
But their maps also slashed the number of districts where a majority of residents are Black, despite Detroits status as the nations largest Black-majority city.
Although commissioners and their counsel have adamantly defended the maps compliance with the Voting Rights Act, many Detroit public officials, community organizers and activists have called the commissions analysis into question, arguing the current district configurations will jeopardize Black residents ability to elect Black lawmakers and erode the citys presence in the state Legislature."

Redistricting is a wash is because some Dem states are being as aggressive as Republican.
It's not all or solely because of commissions.
