9. Smallpox and polio
Wed Dec 29, 2021, 08:26 PM

In the past when someone was described as fair of face it meant they were not scarred by smallpox.

Polio-we saw the braces, wheelchairs and iron lungs.
COVID leaves no visible marks, so the fear associated with other diseases is not there.
Who know what the next variant will bring?

In 1966, one of my classmates wore leg braces.

((How many will be suffering from long COVID?))

And I do remember the sugar cube.

And I THINK I still can detect the smallpox shot scar.

In some ways it has opened a new can of worms.

4. I remember getting my sugar cube with the red dot in it for polio.

None of us, including my parents, knew what was in that red dot, but we took it anyway because the media let us know the dangers of polio. Antivaxxers are just ridiculous because unless they literally grow everything they eat, they have no idea what is in their food supplies, including some pretty nasty chemicals, but I haven’t heard any of them boycotting food.

8. I'm almost 65 and I still have my small pox scar

When I was a public school teacher in the 80s, I had to show my small pox scar, show proof that I was up to date on MMR and DPT vaccines and test negative for TB. Never in a million years did I ever think that life saving vaccines would become a political issue.

11. Childhood diseases were too often fatal

I went to a family reunion a few years ago. People shared their branches of the family tree. It was a rare branch that didn’t have children lost to diseases. One family had nine children, only two lived to adulthood. But we are several generations removed from those days. We no longer remember when we didn’t have herd immunity. Herd immunity that is the result of widespread vaccinations. Herd immunity that is now in jeopardy because of antivaxxers.

13. Well, there was heavy opposition to smallpox vaccination,

from the very beginning. Book after book was written and published opposing it. It's interesting to look at the history of vaccination for smallpox. Travelling speakers railed against it all over the world. No internet, but the anti-vaxxers still got the word out.
