Fauci suggests skipping big New Year’s parties as infections skyrocket

Americans planning to ring in 2022 with dozens of other people should reconsider their plans as the omicron variant causes coronavirus infections to surge, Anthony S. Fauci, the Biden administration’s chief medical adviser, said Wednesday.

People should feel comfortable gathering with small groups of relatives who are vaccinated and boosted, he said. Although there is some inherent risk, Fauci said he feels it is low enough to be worth the benefits of togetherness.

But, he said, “If your plans are to go to a 40-to-50-person New Year’s Eve party with all the bells and whistles and everybody hugging and kissing and wishing each other a happy new year? I would strongly recommend that this year we do not do that.”

As omicron washes over America, much of the country still isn’t using exposure notification apps

This year we do have to go out to dinner though since we have no kitchen due to a remodel, but we're just going to a local diner we like and probably around 6 p.m. so we'll be home way before the craziness. Will probably watch the ball drop at 9 p.m. our time and be in bed by 10. LOL!

...from 1978 to 2007. The only one we missed was '86 (into '87) because the band was only 5 weeks old. That band played every NYE from '87 to '07. Twenty-one in a row.
We played the last 12 in a 300 person club 10 blocks from our house. None of the guys drank at gigs, so our party started at our house @ 215am.
The band (4 plus sound, lights, spotlight guys), their SO's, and about 30 long time fans.
The streets around the house cleared by noon!
We are New Years Eved out!
We toast a glass of champagne about midnight Warsaw time!

We were 75% covers, 25% are own stuff.
We covered stuff like The Fixx, INXS, Talking Heads, Utopia, The Cars, The Police, etc. We put our own twist on 90% of the covers. Adding harmonies where they weren't originally. Using keyboards on 2 guitar songs, and 2 guitars on keyboard driven songs, playing some fast songs slower, slower song faster....
Here's what I've been messing with lately.

If I go out on NYE it will be with friends or family/extended family members who don't mind doing the driving. But never doing that again, and who knows how much Uber fares are now?

listen this time. Here in Ireland out highest positive case day was 8,000 last January. We had 16,000 announced today, it will probably be higher tomorrow and the day after etc. And we have 94% of the adults double vaccinated, with 44% boosted.

who will not take this advice.

We haven’t gone out for NYE in years. Our plan is the same as last year - order in sushi, open a bottle of Prosecco and watch a movie. I doubt we will even make it to midnight.

Dr. Fauchi has been reduced to a partisan hack by the relentless attacks on his character by right wing propaganda outlets. The people apt to listen to him are already doing so. The rest couldn’t care less what he advises.

Not really a big NYE person anyway.

I am planning to have an early dinner w/ some friends at a Thai restaurant and then come home and watch "The Lost Daughter" which is premiering on Netflix. I am really looking forward to watching it.

That is about all the NYE excitement for me. I prefer to avoid all the madness later on in the evening.

I think of a scene from The Big Bang Theory. Raj and Howard are talking about public service announcements from their youths (India and the U.S., respectively). Raj talks about a character Munmun the Mongoose who warned children to stay away from cobras. Howard give Raj a look and says, "You had to be warned not to play with cobras?" Raj answers, "You need Smokey the Bear to tell you not to burn down the forest?"

So, yeah, sometimes the screamingly obvious still needs to be said. We have some very dedicated and resourceful fools out there, looking to subvert even the most foolproof advice.
