President Joe Biden warned President Vladimir Putin on Thursday that continuing Russias aggressive military buildup on the border with Ukraine could force NATO to move more troops into eastern Europe and reiterated any further violation of its territory would exact serious costs and consequences, administration officials said.
But they also expressed hope that more formal strategic stability talks between Washington and Moscow set for January on myriad issues could lead to a path out of the current crisis that Russia says is intended to prevent Ukraine from joining the Western alliance.
President Biden laid out two aspects of the U.S. approach that will really depend on Russias actions in the period ahead, a senior administration official told reporters after the afternoon call Washington time. One is a path of diplomacy leading toward a declaration of the situation and the other is a path that is more focused on deterrence, including serious costs and consequences should Russia choose to proceed with a further invasion of Ukraine.
The official said that includes adjustments and augmentation of NATO force posture in allied countries as well as additional assistance to Ukraine to enable it to further defend itself and its territory.

(32,012 posts)Has he faced any real resistance from any president? Not really. When he took over Crimea a few Russians were sanctioned and no one cared. There was a thread here a few days ago saying he had withdrawn troops from the Ukraine border. It turned out he didn't, U.S. officials said Russia has not withdrawn any troops.

(8,779 posts)Is Putin fluent in English or is the conversation through translators?
One would assume the call would be a video call and probably a video conference call given translators.
Also are "senior admin officials" present at time of the call and listened of is the sao repeating for press what he has been told?
One wonders if each side has some sort of presentation to help define a starting point and put sideboards on the diplomacy.
