I think there needs to be more context to claims that children are being hospitalized at 2 and 3x higher rates. Instead it should be a comparison of how many are seriously I'll. I saw similar reports from the UK of incidental covid in hospitals with omicron; resting positive after being admitted for something else.
There is now substantial evidence of this variant being less severe. I don't understand why certain segments have to try to make it seem worse.
a woman representing a hospital system, saying Omicron is NOT less severe than Delta, among the unvaccinated. It only appears to be less severe because so many hospitalized are double-vaxed, which provides some protection. Last I noticed, less than a third of the country are boosted.
Anyway, children under 5 can't be vaccinated, and a large percentage between 5-10 aren't vaccinated, so she said there are more seriously ill in the hospital.
I saw the report about there being more cases, because children being admitted for something else, and also testing positive for covid, which is entirely different metric.
Also, South Africa is reporting they are on the other side of their peak, BUT the older people among that young population are STILL getting severely ill.

So over half of their covid cases are incidental. That's not what we were seeing in other waves. And yes certainly cases can be severe and the chance of that will always be higher in associated with the level of vaccination in a person....but on an individual basis this strain is clearly less severe
The larger risk of this strain is that it is going to spread highly....especially in people around it a lot, like hospital staff. So staff are going to be reduced which will lead to strain on the system.
But considering how fast it moves it is going to burn itself out faster than other strains too....which we have seen in other theaters.

(3,282 posts)He's talking about nationwide trends and at that level I doubt there us granularity to say it's non-incidental cases

(2,051 posts)Dr. Robert McGregor, chief medical officer at Akron Children's Hospital said across the country, states are reporting increases of up to 50 percent for pediatric hospital admissions for COVID-19. With the holidays, it's possible these numbers could go up.
The "with" in th he first quote could be read to mean that COVID isn't what brought them to the hospital, but not the "for" in the 2nd quote, unless it was used it wrongly.
Isn't one of the data points out of the South Africa surge that under 5 was one of the hardest hit age groups?

(32,016 posts)Dr. Anthony Fauci has downplayed concerns about a rise in the number of children in hospital with COVID, as the Omicron variant continues its rapid spread.
Speaking to MSNBC's Ayman Mohyeldin, who was filling in for Rachel Maddow on Wednesday night, Fauci suggested that some of the children currently being treated at medical facilities were hospitalized with COVID as opposed to "because of COVID."
He added that some children who are currently listed as being in hospital with COVID may actually be receiving treatment for "a broken leg or appendicitis," rather than for a severe reactions to the virus.
