(65,054 posts)He's a hack guitarist.
He's never even been the best guitar player in his own band. (Except when he went with a trio & he was the only guitarist.)

(6,011 posts)I have a slight disagreement with your post.
As a musician, I can tell you that there are bigger hacks than Nugent when it comes to guitar playing. I've played with plenty of them. I won't take the guitar skills that he does possess away from him, as much as I hate him. I'd rate him as "High Average". He hasn't evolved out of his particular style, which makes him a "left behind".
100% agreement on not being the best in his band. Derek St. Holmes ran circles around him, both playing guitar and singing.

(65,054 posts)We disagree on him being high average.
His playing is pedestrian, devoid of linearity, and repetitive. I'm WAY better than he is, and I didn't even start playing until I was 19. (Admittedly, by then I was a piano player for 15 years, 6 of those involved in jazz competitions.)
If he was just a guy backing a singer, I might have a different view. But, when one is headlining one's own act, being less than awful doesn't cut it.
Agree on Derek, & in Damn Yankess, Tommy Shaw blew him away.
There are several very renowned guitarists that I think are awful. Some of those names would make me unpopular in these parts. So, I'll leave them unnamed.
