I drove a truck for a company that hauled munitions and explosives for the military and retired from that job a few years ago at 55. The owner of the corporation that owned this and several other companies wanted his son to know more about the business than just the board room and asked me to let him work with me for 2 years right out of college. He actually worked hard and was one of the better helpers I had and when he left he thanked me and said he had learned a lot that would help him. At first I thought I was just being fed a line but afterwards he checked in with me to make sure everything he was hearing from management was true and took and interest in helping the employees.
He contacted me before the holidays and asked me if I would come out of retirement to help with a new company they had where the management didn't make safety a priority for employees or the public and would I come out of retirement to help get them on track. I told him I didn't really know much about management or running a company and he said just teach them what you taught me. I agreed to help for a year as long as I am not a paper tiger and can really make a difference and that is exactly what he wants. Is it strange that although he only worked with me for two year that I am proud that he still remembers and practices what I taught him?

(12,390 posts)I recommend they pay you to take the course.... better yet, pay their employees to take the D.O.t. and O.S.H.A courses. They are both eye openers.
Place I worked for just got a 70K O.S.H.A. fine.
Anyway, congratulations on being a well regarded employee.

Trustworthiness is a lasting attribute. He recalls you as one to be trusted.

(2,739 posts)It isnt often someone is called out of retirement because someone remembers their excellence and integrity!
And I agree with NNadir, that young man has the makings of a fine manager, one who cares about quality!

(6,362 posts)First, the corporate owner recognized your worth
AND he wanted his son to work around someone that he, obviously, highly regarded
And then... the son took that task seriously and learned a lot.
And now... the son is taking over another company that isn't doing things right and he wants help.
This just says "win, win, win" all over it!!!
All trucking companies should care like these people!
