Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Friday shot back at criticisms from right-wing figures after a photo of her on vacation with her boyfriend in Florida was shared online, suggesting that her critics stop "projecting their sexual frustrations" on her.
Steve Cortes, a former Trump campaign adviser, shared a photo on Twitter on Friday of Ocasio-Cortez in public with her boyfriend Riley Roberts vacationing in Florida.
Cortes attacked Ocasio-Cortez for not wearing a mask in public and also took aim at Roberts's "gross pale male feet in public."
Ocasio-Cortez responded by retweeting the photo and writing, "If Republicans are mad they can't date me they can just say that instead of projecting their sexual frustrations onto my boyfriend's feet. Ya creepy weirdos."

It was then that Bash clarified, So, it sounds like what youre telling me right now is that you didnt only think you were going to die, you thought you were going to be raped. Ocasio-Cortez nodded in agreement and said, Yeah, yeah. I thought I was.

(3,626 posts)The original insult is at AOC because her boyfriend is ugly and she is obviously therefore underperforming in the boyfriend department. That's not even between the damn lines, it's supertext.
AOC sees this and goes for the jugular, because that's what she does. Your rule about going after AOC online is, don't. She will wrap it around your neck. Which she did here. She can date whoever she fucking wants to, and if you go after her date you're not going after her, you're going after her whole world and she will burn you down. No more Ms. Nice Gal.
I like that about her. We need more like her. We needed them 40 years ago.

Also, why do you dislike AOC so much? You're posting in a thread where I would have thought everyone would be condemning the creepy Republican attacks on her, not turning around and attacking her instead.

(22,913 posts)The ice storm and subsequent infrastructure collapse that Cruz fled from in Texas to Mexico was an acute sudden crisis of local (as in Texas) origin which required new unique Texas based solutions and mobilization of state resources. As a U.S. Senator Cruz is one of a handful of statewide elected leaders in Texas. When Cruz left Texas for Mexico he literally was fleeing hardships facing his fellow Texans so that he could luxuriate on a warm beach. AOC has lived through the Covid pandemic alongside her constituents for years, and like millions of other New Yorkers, she continues to live a semblance of a normal life which includes taking occasional vacation trips. Cruz fled to Mexico to evade miserable conditions in Texas. AOC did not evade the Covid pandemic by spending a little time in Florida. It's as bad there as anywhere else.
Yes Covid has peak waves, and yes we are in one now, but the pandemic is not a sudden new crisis, it is an ongoing public health emergency occurring nation wide. Plans to deal with it are constantly tweaked, but that planning is an ongoing function of state and local governments and has been a top priority of New York State literally for years now. AOC taking a well deserved short vacation has no negative impact on New York's ability to respond to the Omicron surge. She is escaping from nothing and will soon be back from vacation while the pandemic continues to rage both in Florida and New York.

(6,806 posts)The reason Cruz was criticized was because he could escape from a problem that he was having no part in solving, or do you not agree that AOC has been a part of the solution?
AOC = part of the solution
Cruz = part of the problem

(487 posts)that insist on seeing her as undermining the Democratic Party. The infrastructure and BBB bills are the perfect example. She is regularly cast as the villain hurting Biden's agenda rather than Manchin, Sinema, or other corporate friendly "centrists", which is patently ridiculous. The reflex is to cast anything she does in a negative light. She could pause to eat a bowl of cereal and promptly be accused of failing to feed the hungry.

They take little snapshots in time, toss out any interest in context, and run with the "AOC is all flash and no substance" narrative that they simply can't let go.
At least one person had the good sense to delete her posts after it became clear she was taking a wildly unwarranted swipe at the Congresswoman.

(8,712 posts)The normalization of violence toward female politicians is meant to scare them out of politics particularly women of color like Ocasio-Cortez, a top object of obsession for white supremacists and leading Republicans who characterize her as foreign although shes a Bronx-born Puerto Rican.
The ultimate goal of this is to eliminate these women from political life, said Lucina Di Meco, an expert in gendered disinformation and online abuse against women in politics and a co-founder of #ShePersisted. To silence them, to make it so unappealing and so dangerous for them and their families to be active politically that they will want to retreat.

Ocasio-Cortez told Vanity Fair last summer she receives all manner of threats, often seeing a swell after far-right lies and attacks are amplified by conservative media.
I used to wake up in the morning and literally get a stack of pictures that were forwarded by Capitol police or FBI, she told the magazine. Like, These are the people who want to kill you today.

(16,412 posts)I don't understand the animosity toward AOC. I really don't. Personally, I think she's brilliant and delightful.
I think a lot of the attacks on her are deeply rooted in misogyny, conscious or not. Some people just can't with a woman who is that young and beautiful, AND that smart, strong, and confident, all at the same time. Some people who are okay with plain, smart girls or dumb, beautiful ones get very uncomfortable when they're confronted with a woman who smashes all the stereotypes.
DUers need to stop hating on AOC. She does not deserve it.

Sorry, I meant no offense.
I don't see the "squad" as being progressive, but I know others here still cling to that hope.
Candidates like AOC point to their efforts to build grassroots support and online "armies," with popular programs like M4A and wage increases, etc. But the minute they get that first paycheck they abandon the movements that helped get them into office - never again rallying them for support or pressure with their legislative efforts.
They just seem to be tweeting a lot of slogans, wearing "statement" gowns to galas, and perpetuating the red/blue divide.
Autumn
