Parents selling children shows desperation in Afghanistan

Parents selling children shows desperation in Afghanistan

SHEDAI CAMP, Afghanistan (AP) — In a sprawling settlement of mud brick huts in western Afghanistan housing people displaced by drought and war, a woman is fighting to save her daughter.

Aziz Gul's husband sold the 10-year-old girl into marriage without telling his wife, taking a down-payment so he could feed his family of five children. Without that money, he told her, they would all starve. He had to sacrifice one to save the rest.

Many of Afghanistan's growing number of destitute people are making desperate decisions such as these as their nation spirals into a vortex of poverty.

The aid-dependent country's economy was already teetering when the Taliban seized power in mid-August amid a chaotic withdrawal of U.S. and NATO troops. The international community froze Afghanistan's assets abroad and halted all funding, unwilling to work with a Taliban government given its reputation for brutality during its previous rule 20 years ago.

Sooner of later there will be uprisings against them. Let them work it out for themselves. Glad we're out of there.

Joe Biden did the right thing getting us out. He took a lot of flack for the attack on the evacuation operation near the end but when you think about it, for an operation of that magnitude there were relatively few casualties. Now we're out, it's out of the news and Biden is not being hit by republicans about it anymore. Most Americans are glad of it, if they even think about it anymore.

Let the Afghans solve their own internal problems.

In my opinion what Afghanistan would benefit from is major economic development. The power of that can smash ideologies to dust.

father-of-four Hamid Abdullah was also selling his young daughters into arranged marriages, desperate for money to treat his chronically ill wife, pregnant with their fifth child." (emphasis mine)

So, the woman is just breeding females for Hamid to sell as sex slaves. " (Y)oung daughters" plural, as in more than one being sold into slavery, and #5 will also be sold if it's a girl.

...he received a down-payment for his eldest daughter Hoshran, now 7, in an arranged marriage to an 18-year-old in their native Badghis province. He's now looking for someone to buy his second daughter, 6-year-old Nazia.

I can't even. And our own Murican Taliban is on the same path. Enslave women and all else follows.

Right wingers blame Afghanistan's problems on Biden but...

when asked what Biden did that was against Trump's negotiations, they can only make excuses and lies.

The only thing Biden did that was against Trump's policies was that he took too long and Trump whined about that.

The article mentions that. The mother of the first girl mentioned raised borrowed money to stop the sale of her daughter by “divorcing her daughter” but she may not be able to pay it back. It is mostly girls apparently but one family is selling their 8 year old son or trying to.
