Rhode Island Lawmaker Who Sponsored Anti-CRT Bill Whines That Black Friend No Longer Likes Her

Rhode Island State Rep. Patricia Morgan bizarrely complained her Black friend is now “hostile and unpleasant” thanks to “racial identity politics” and critical race theory.

Rhode Island State Rep. Patricia Morgan set Twitter ablaze Tuesday when she blasted out a bizarre post claiming she’d lost a Black friend due to a recent conservative obsession: critical race theory. In the tweet, the Republican lawmaker complained that her friend had become “hostile and unpleasant” towards her—simply because she’s a white woman. “Is that what teachers and our political leaders really want for our society? Divide us because of our skin color? #CRT,” Morgan wrote.

Morgan’s post was immediately flooded with responses, as thousands called out her tone deaf statement. “Oof....the fact that you think this tweet is ok shows just how much you have to learn. It might be she was just too exhausted to be your teacher,” one Twitter user posted. “It’s not CRT...it’s you. Had you had access to CRT, maybe you wouldn't have alienated your friend.” “CRT is about learning actual history and why people have an advantage for having white skin,” another wrote. “None of my friends are asking me to hate myself. That's not the issue. They want me to be aware/learn & do what I can to help.”

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Morgan refused to name the pal, but said they used to be close until the friend stopped responding to her phone calls and messages. “I’m sad that she doesn’t feel like she’s my friend anymore,” Morgan said. “I know that she has become a real proponent of racial identity politics. And I’m pretty sure that’s the reason behind it. I’m sad that our country is going down that road. I think it’s bad for our country.”

In March, Morgan co-sponsored a bill in Rhode Island that would have banned the teaching of more than just critical race theory in public schools. The bill, RI H6070, failed to pass in June but was meant to prohibit the “teaching of divisive concepts” as well as mandate that “any contract, grant or training entered into by state or municipality include provisions prohibiting divisive concepts and prohibit making individual feel distress on account of their race or sex.”

CRT and so-called divisive teaching may have had something to do with her friend re-accessing their friendship.

Having such a friend is hardly worth it.

(That was sarcasm and not an excuse of her behavior - just in case)

Her "black friend" reminds me of Trump's "Sir" stories.

Didn't happen but she made shit up so she could make a comment she was itching to make about CRT and black people.

Trump did it to praise himself.

She did it to further her attacks on CRT and black people.

"I had a black friend."

"A" black friend. One whole, single, solitary, black friend. "Had," past tense. The fact that she lacks the awareness to realize how pathetic that sounds says volumes, doesn’t it?

But, in my defense, I don't have a lot of friends. There are three people with whom I speak on a regular basis and one of them is Black. He is also male, gay, tall, young and kinda hot.

I am white, female, straight, short, old and sorta cute. We joke about starring in a TV series about a pair of mismatched detectives. Oh, and even though we do discuss social justice issues, our main bonding took place over our love of the show, Firefly. . . Well, that and our shared experience working in customer service. War stories, you know?

I hope she can sleep at night, worrying about the loss of her imaginary "Black Friend". Maybe she can construct an imaginary "Latina Friend" this time.

You were never a caring individual who thought how your actions blocking teaching the truth about history could hurt other people. You never really did thing all people are created equal. You think teaching truth is a divisive concept and can make you "feel bad" so it shouldn't be taught. CRT and skin color doesn't divide people, your interpretation of them do. She realizes you are the proponent of identify politics because it's your identity that is threatened.

I really did have a black friend. We first me at the company where we both worked part-time while attending the same college in the early 1980s. At the beginning of our friendship, we were talking about hair care. She said she only needed to wash hers once a week. I said I had to wash mine nearly every day. Without a moment's hesitation, she deadpanned, "well, that's what you get for being white."

I had the best times with my friend.

Oh, come on, lady!

How do you think most Black people following this issue are going to feel. A theory that helps to point out various roadblocks, etc in civil rights progress as it
relates to the law, and you're not supporting it.

You're a Representative dealing with making laws.

I can remember Professor Bell (I was surprised to find out it was he who created CRT) being interviewed a few times on public radio. I admit I don't remember if it was specifically on CRT at those times.
It did seem he was getting more, and more pessimistic about further civil rights successes. That distressed me bc I try and hope for the best, while also trying to do my small part in making things better including justice, equality.
