(CNN)You soon won't be able to use that old BlackBerry phone sitting at the bottom of your drawer somewhere.
Starting Tuesday, January 4, the company will stop running support for its classic devices running BlackBerry 10, 7.1 OS and earlier. This means all of its older devices not running on Android software will no longer be able to use data, send text messages, access the internet or make calls, even to 911.
While most mobile users have moved on from BlackBerry -- the last version of its operating system launched in 2013 -- the move to discontinue support for its phones represents the end of what was once considered bleeding-edge technology.
The company originally announced the news in September 2020 as part of its efforts to focus on providing security software and services to enterprises and governments around the world under the name BlackBerry Limited.

(649 posts)Blackberry Curve ... palm sized phone, with physical keyboard. Used it for calls and SMS only. Best texting phone I've ever had. Gave it up b/c AT&T is ditching 3g. New Andriod phone is 'ok' ... Android 11 is a pain. Wants to sync with every other Android device in the neighborhood and has so much 'battery optimization' that you can't even rely on the alarm. Managed to turn as much of that off as I could find, but the phone still makes its own decisions, and the behavior is unpredictable as to how much, when, and if an alarm is delayed. Also voice commands on the phone are a real hassle if you're not connected to the internet ... and STILL require you to touch the phone. A real problem if you're driving.
Blackberry just worked, no question. Connect your bluetooth headset and leave the phone in your pocket, and no problem doing voice commands offline.

(18,123 posts)There are a lot of things where "they don't make 'em like they used to" holds true.
That said, I like my iphone.

(649 posts)... and they seem great, and very reliable.
I got my Blackberry for $30bux on eBay. 1990s tech that did exactly what I needed. Also had a replaceable battery.
I just can't justify spending $700+ on a phone that you have to pitch if the battery goes bad.
I ended up getting a 'pretty good' Android phone for $100 ... with a replaceable battery. I am not gaming or watching movies, etc, on my phone, so I don't need a lot of computing power. Matter of fact, it's working great with no data plan at all. Phone bill is $25/month.
