Her Dad is totally an anti-vaxxer and rightwing wacko. My friend's husband (let's call him John) is the father of the sick baby's mother. My heart is breaking for them. Here is what she has told me about what's going on:
Just wanted to let you know Steph texted late last night and their 3-year-old, is in Texas Children's Hospital with breathing difficulties and fluid on her lungs. They're supposedly going to take her into surgery this morning to drain the fluid from her lungs but she didn't say what the diagnosis was. I think we kinda know. More to come. Helluva start to the new year. John is beside himself, mostly with anger at how cavalier the parents have been. They sent a video last week of Collins doing little cheers in the middle of a packed Houston Texans football game, and their Christmas was just packed with huge crowded social events, so it's not hard to figure out what happened. Plus Steph tested positive for COVID antibodies again about 10 days ago, so she's had it twice now. She said she is still thinking about getting a vaccination but is still uncertain about it. Just shoot me now! Anyway, more to come on little Collins.
And then this update:
Just got another update: They drained an unusually large amount of fluid from Collins' lungs and have admitted her to ICU. They will determine in a few hours whether to place her on a ventilator but this is not the outcome any of us were prepared for. Steph has yet to tell us what the diagnosis is but we don't really have to ask. My heart is breaking and John has withdrawn into complete silence. For him, this is enormous distress. Will write more later when we know more.
As you may or may not know, I'm not a particularly religious person, but prayers are in order for this innocent child.
*UPDATE*
Another update: They didn't have to put a ventilator in - whew! She is requiring frequent breathing treatments, oxygen and some other stuff. Her fever is under control now but they are going to keep her for a bit in the hospital. Still don't know exactly what's wrong with her, things have stayed a bit sketchy with Steph but we're pretty glad to hear she is not going to have a ventilator for now. Baby steps, but we'll take what we can get.
Thanks for your prayers and healing vibes. You are all the best!

(65,042 posts)Even if the child survives, there could be damage to the lungs that will last a lifetime.

(9,580 posts)He is a really controlling guy, obviously, and she is the stereotypical Texas housewife and minor socialite. I can't begin to understand how a mother could "fall in line" behind this asshole. But you are right in your assessment.

I also truly hope that at some point in the future karma pays back w/ compound interest those who were asked to think about and have compassion for others and instead of doing what they could to not be a danger to others gave them finger instead. The collateral
pain and suffering they have put on others is unforgivable.

(8,820 posts)Don't these Republican Politicians and Republican voters have children or grand children???????????????
Absolutely nothing in their actions would make one think so.............
I think it may have been Abraham Lincoln, who once said:
A Statesman is intersted in the next generation, a Politician is only concerned with the next election......
Whatever person said it, it appears to be an excellent quote for current times!!!!!!!!!!

(31,388 posts)The omicron variant is turning out to put more kids at risk. Childrens Hospitals are admitting more kids really sick with COVID than previously. Pediatricians are urging parents to vaccinate eligible kids and to protect kids too young to vaccinate by limiting their exposure to unvaccinated and unmasked crowds.

(809 posts)There was a child who was 11 that was in very bad shape and they flew her to Childrens in Pittsburgh and they put her on an oscillating ventilator and she actually improved. Dont know if they can do this for a three year old but it wont hurt to ask. This child I speak of was near death.

(51,593 posts)investigate these cases. Parents are knowinly putting their children in harm's way. That is fucked up! Call CPS on all the parents who do this.

(9,580 posts)however, parental rights, particularly in regards to medical care and treatment, is a tough nut to crack.
