https://www.idahostatesman.com/news/local/crime/article256880192.htmlIdaho will once again pursue executing an inmate for the first time in almost a decade.
The states parole board backed reducing a convicted killers death sentence to life in prison before Gov. Brad Little immediately rejected their recommendation. The Commission of Pardons and Parole announced the ruling Thursday evening on its website, ending a month of speculation over the fate of double-murderer Gerald Pizzuto. It was just the second time Idahos parole board had recommended clemency for a death row inmate since the state reinstituted capital punishment in 1977.
The seven-member board voted 4-3 in favor of recommending clemency, according to Little in a statement. Such deliberations are held behind closed doors and normally restricted from public release, per state law.

The parole board, meanwhile, said in a statement that it made its decision with the intention of granting mercy over Pizzutos failing health and declining intellectual abilities.

Pizzuto has been on death row since 1985 when he was convicted of killing two people in Idaho County. According to court records, Pizzuto was camping near Ruby Meadows when he came across 58-year-old Berta Herndon and her 37-year-old nephew Del Herndo. Pizzuto went into their cabin, tied them up, beat them to death with a hammer and stole their belongings.
Pizzuto also had a previous history of violence, including rape and two other murders in Seattle, which happened just before the Idaho County murders.
