I dropped into the local knitting store a couple of Fridays ago. The owner's sister, who owns a breakfast place in town, was sitting at the group table. She says, "I think both vice presidential candidates did a good job last night. They didn't embarrass themselves." I nodded assent as I was walking to the door. The only other knitter there said, "Paul Ryan, though, like all Republican candidates, hates women and would take us back to the 50s as far as our rights are concerned." The owner's sister said, "Oh, I know that. But we won't let them do that. They're going to have a hard time taking away Wavey. In fact, I think it's impossible."
The other knitter and I raised our eyebrows. "Wavey?" I asked.
"Yeah, Wavey. You know, that abortion law."
"Roe v. Wade?"
"Yeah, that's it."
And so it goes.
