Columnist Will Bunch: Trump Came Much Closer to Pulling Off a January 6 Coup Than People Realize

January 05, 2022

The January 6 insurrection resulted in criminal charges for over 700 rioters, and the FBI has since called it an act of domestic terrorism. Philadelphia Inquirer national columnist Will Bunch says there is growing evidence that links Trump and his inner circle to the Capitol attack. He argues understanding what was happening behind the scenes at the Pentagon, which has operational control over the National Guard in D.C., can help explain Trump’s botched attempt to overturn the 2020 election and the insurrection that followed.

“I think they fully believed that they would be able to call out the National Guard,” says Bunch, explaining Trump’s strategy to incite violence between his supporters and counterprotesters in an attempt to make military orders to disrupt the certification. Bunch predicts Trump and allies will delay cooperation with the House probe into the attack until Republicans can gain congressional power in 2022 and dismiss the investigation.

They will not get that chance. The investigations will lay bare their treacherous ways.

All feared consequences. So they knew it was wrong, and didn't quite believe it would succeed.

That was the missing element for the coup they planned, they just assumed that there would be thousands of counter protesters they could blame for the violence and call the national guard in to take over the city.

They believe their judgment is superior, that they know their enemy better than their enemy knows themselves. They thought Portand a harbinger, but failed to notice it was a fizzle. In other words, they thought Antifa would show up no matter what because look at the size of progressive protests over the course of TFG's 4 years! But progressives, liberals, large and seemingly undisciplined, really do stay within the lines. The Stable Genius got trumped by reality.

He also has a history of blaming BLM supporters, always ready to deflect responsibility.

who were trying to defend the Capitol from the onslaught of Herr Drumpf's insurrectionists.

During the 2016 election TFG had said what he would do during a debate with HRC. Q: "Mr. Trump, are you willing to accept the results of the election?" T**** answered, "If I win I will."

Everyone laughed. It was clearly a joke.

Two things about TFG: (1) He has no sense of humor, and (2) under no circumstances will he allow himself to be seen as a loser.

The military was wise to insert itself between Donnie's fat finger and the Red Button, otherwise on January 6th Tehran might have found itself turned into a radioactive crater.

Trump and the Republican party are still working hard at it. It's just that this time, it will be done silently.
