(15,258 posts)Or perhaps that's what you are referring to.
While I believe that many of "them" (rwnj, anti-vaxxers, anti-science, know-nothings, etc.) are using this technique - perhaps unconsciously - to treat the "others" as non-human, I sometimes feel that it's too easy for me to treat "them" as non-human.

(6,829 posts)There may have been a good service for dehumanizing "others" somewhere in our prehistory, maybe even necessary for human survival. I hold that at the current state of technological evolution we are way too lethal to use that technique, on any level, just so we might feel good about our participation in our lives. Gets right to the point about defining "freedom" and how it does, alas, end where another's nose begins.
I've been fortunate that since I was quite young my thinking has leaned toward disabusing myself of notions wherein the worthiness of mine or anyone else's beliefs merit joining them. I saw an uncomfortable invasion of my personal space in activities like group worship, clubs, athletic teams and parades. It was as if I were seeing others, marching beneath their banners, as a disembodied non-participant. I felt that as I walked among them, they'd not even be able to be aware of me. From that state of awareness (paranoic dissociation?) it seemed to me that the will of the participants seemed to have been abridged without their knowledge, their participation looked autonomic and how in that state they would be prone to think and do things perhaps not of their own mind but of someone they'd accepted as "leader". It profoundly frightened and angered me. I came to distrust people given over to those states.
I go into all that to make a point. It being that the whole previous diatribe is essentially an exercise in rationalizing my dehumanization of those marchers in their parades. In that, I'm a member of a very large and nonexclusive club.
In answer to your question, I feel safe in saying "I'm pretty much the same guy I changed into yesterday and I expect I'll always be."

(45,442 posts)as in they are having COVID parties to get "natural immunity" because Let's Go Darwin.
As for "just like the flu" we will be having lots of new variants forever. And most all of them will have descended from COVID-19 as an ancestor just like most seasonal flu variants descended from the 1918 flu pandemic. The flu kills plenty of people every year including Trump's own immigrant grandfather Frederick.

(2,993 posts)When I was a kid in the 1970's, it wasn't uncommon for all of the kids in the neighborhood to visit a friend who'd just come down with chicken pox. The parents would do this on purpose on the theory that chicken pox was inevitable and not so bad for a child, and so they'd deliberately expose this to their kids to get it over with.
IronLionZion
(45,442 posts)Once you've had chickenpox, the shingles virus is laying dormant in your body until you either get a very painful illness or get vaccinated for shingles. And infected kids often share it with adults in their life.

(2,771 posts)Either these anti-vaxx folks must have the best health care coverage that there is or bankruptcy will loom for a great many of them. Im surprised insurance companies arent changing coverage guidelines because of the cost of insuring the unvaxxed. If a groups claims cost the company too much, that groups premiums rise. Will many of these folks be forced into vaccination or Obamacare?

(16,846 posts)Had all the Covid shots I could get, plus flu, shingles, and pneumonia. I told my family that if I ended up in the hospital, I don't want to be on a ventilator. The thought of being on one of those things for a month and then dying anyway would be an awful way to go, in my opinion. Just give me some pain killers and let me slip away.

(21,106 posts)We have too, including wearing double masks every time we leave our home and NEVER inviting anyone over. Did you also do this? And still got it?
MontanaMama
(23,314 posts)We mask absolutely everywhere no exceptions. We got it from a fully vaxxed boosted employee of ours who gathered with his family over Christmas. All of the family was vaxxed and boosted too. Every one of them got Covid. Even several babies who double vaccinated. It is so discouraging. I will say that Ive spent a good portion of this week angry. My husband sat across the table in our lunchroom from the employee and thats as close as he got. I got it from hubs. Our kiddo is still testing negative, thank goodness. Im sorry you got sick.

There are other patients with serious health issues whose treatments get postponed because some thought they did their research.
CaptainTruth
(6,591 posts)Remember when right wingers said that back when the ACA bill was being debated in Congress? The ACA prevented insurers from denying coverage to sick people, & they couldn't charge them higher premiums. So, the rationale was that most people would pay a little more so people with serious health issues wouldn't be bankrupted by exorbitant premiums or denied insurance altogether.
I remember right wingers saying "I don't want to pay more because of your bad life choices," as if all health problems were the result of "bad life choices." (I was born with my health problem, so apparently I made a bad life choice while developing in the womb, although none of them could explain to me how that worked.)
Now, who's going to pay for all the hospital care for all the antivaxxers? Are MY insurance premiums going to increase? Am I going to have to pay more? Well right wingers, you were the ones who said "I don't want to pay more because of your bad life choices," so guess what?
I don't want to pay more because of your bad life choices!
If I had more free time I would Google old articles to find those right wing comments about the ACA, it would be good to have a collection of them to send to antivaxxers & share on social media. Maybe someone on DU has time to do the searching???

(32,639 posts)The US insurance companies were fighting the ACA tooth-and-nail and they pulled out all the stops. I wouldn't be surprised if they hired underground PR people to post those "opinions" under fake names in the MSM. Their purpose was to make it look like a groundswell of pushback against the ACA, when in fact it was the Repukes and the insurance companies who opposed all of it. Of course the Repukes opposed the ACA because they didn't want Obama to get a win.
