Republican Adam Kinzinger Describes GOP as 'Unrecognizable,' Says Trump 'Basically Insane'

Representative Adam Kinzinger, an Illinois Republican, described the modern-day GOP as "unrecognizable" and said that its current leader—former President Donald Trump—is "basically insane."

Kinzinger has become one of Trump's harshest critics in the wake of the 2020 presidential election and the January 6, 2021 attack targeting the U.S. Capitol. Although the GOP congressman said he voted for Trump in 2020, he has repeatedly slammed the ex-president for spreading lies about the election results and inciting his supporters to carry out the assault against the legislative branch of government just over a year ago.

During a Friday afternoon interview with MSNBC, Kinzinger was asked if he recognizes his political party a year after the violence of the pro-Trump attack on the Capitol.

"No, I don't," he responded. The Republican lawmaker said he's identified with the GOP since he was six years old. "What has changed is the use of conspiracy, the absolute lack of courage to call it out, the fear that permeates leaders of the Republican Party against a man [Trump] that is basically insane," he said.

There have been Ds that switch to Rs because they believe the party is no longer what they value. He could do the same.

...in supply side & job creator myths.
Low taxes, small government, blah blah blah.
I've talked to him a few times.
He's not a frothing maniac. Actually, a pretty pleasant guy.
But, he's very libertarian & would make Manchin look like a liberal if he was a dem.
Besides, with the lines redrawn he'd be running in a district where a D can't win.
Pretty sure that's our new district. We only live about 10 miles from where he does.

Sad story.

If he hasn’t come around after all that time, then maybe he’s unreachable. Except, of course, for this bit of a hiccup in the fine print.

Kinda like Liz Cheney.

Yeah, given Kinsinger says he voted for Trump in 2020, I’m confused as to what has changed so drastically. Trump floated all the same election fraud nonsense in 2016, in preparation for losing.

Also odd from Kinsinger comments: he’s identified as Republican since he was 6?

That's why he's not running for re-election. There was speculation of him running for IL Governor, but I don't think it's happening. We have a good Dem Gov, J D Pritzker, but the GOP hates him. I think he'd win re-election.

were drummed right out of him by becoming president and being constantly criticized. His fragile ego could not handle it. He got more and more unhinged. He will continue his downward spiral.

His punishing loss to Biden was the last straw for the ego that could not even handle growing old and bald gracefully. He's a walking talking blob of insecure orange jelly.

I keep thinking we will read about him just vaporizing in a huge puff of smoke and disappearing completely. Being prosecuted for January 6 or for obstruction of the Mueller investigation would do it.

It's always good to hear sensible people say reasonable things. But words are cheap. The question is - are these ideas ACTIONABLE.

The problem is that we should have strengthened the guardrails of democracy 20 years go by passing new election integrity laws, by limiting the power of the President, by proposing Constitutional amendments if necessary, to protect us. We didn't keep our eyes on the prize, instead we pretended it was business as usual.

Now, all the words in the world whether they are from Obama or Biden or Kinzinger are not going to save us from the destruction that the Radical Right is ready, willing and able to unleash.

I understand where Kinzinger comes from. Evil needs to be slightly concealed or it is just tacky. Gone are the days when you could just take the money, wink at the right people and wait for the room to clear so that pasty white men could say tacky crude things. Now days, you have to shout the crude horrid things or no one wants to throw cash at you.

Gone are the glory days of being a Republican. I can understand how a Republican would like to go back the their day of glory when they still wore hoods.
