Requests for appointments to receive a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine spiked only hours after the Quebec government announced the vaccine passport would be required to access provincial liquor stores and cannabis outlets.
Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubé pointed out the increase on his Twitter account Friday morning.
Dubé wrote that while the daily average for first dose appointment requests had been about 1,500, that number soared to 6,000 on Thursday.
While he made no mention of it in his post, the increase coincided with the ministers announcement on Thursday that, effective Jan. 18, a vaccine passport would be required to shop in person at Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) stores and Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) outlets. Dubé said the decision to impose a vaccine passport requirement at these locations was triggered by the continued surge in COVID-19 cases due to the highly contagious Omicron variant. He also said a vaccine passport would eventually be required for other non-essential services, but he did not immediately specify when and where the policy would go into effect.
Dubé noted that half of the provinces hospitalized COVID-19 patients are unvaccinated even though they represent just 10 per cent of the population.

It should be mandatory for being allowed to buy weed or alcohol, then many more would get vaxed.

owned and operated by the government like some states here?

(50,348 posts)14. It depends on the Province...
Alberta has privately owned liquor stores while BC has government-controlled ones.
Provincial governments have been determining how strict the rules are re Covid which is what the Quebec government did, their decision to require vaccinations to enter liquor and cannabis stores is separate from the liquor control laws re distribution, etc.

I will note that the only places around here with 100% mask compliance here are dispensaries & doctors' offices.
So, I can see how their plan would motivate vaccinations.

I don't care why they're getting vaccinated just so long as they are.
