Even if we do manage to pass voter and election protection laws.....

What makes you think the Republican/MAGAts/red states would abide by those laws?

Everything they're doing to subvert voting rights and election procedures is at the state level. I think they'll ignore any Federal laws.

What then?

That why passing it in early 2021 was imperative. Whatever is passed probably won’t affect any election until 2024 IMHO.

The first question is whether the laws will survive the inevitable court challenges.

5. They will if they are passed with a court stripping clause added

Court stripping language states the judiciary has no jurisdiction to rule on the law, as the constitution gives the legislative branch the power to regulate elections.

we shall overcome these fascists. No matter how they try to defeat democracy. We are at war. I tell myself that every day. At this time it's a war of words with me and I turn back to their ratholes every fascist I have to engage with.

It is the Civil War being played out again.

We could be looking at the Balkanization of the United States.
Each state operates separately from the federal system.

Some federal Marshall’s and NG troops might be needed to enforce the law.

If a reform of the electoral count act is included in the new laws, then any monkey wrenching of the electors by the states could be addressed in congress.

Perhaps a clause that states “if a state cannot or does not present a legitimate slate of electors, or if their slate of electors is successfully challenged in congress, the state’s electors shall be awarded based on the national popular vote”.

11. So Republicans decide, on their own, who "wins" the election.

Then they certify that person as the winner. The Electoral Count, as it stands, means that corrupt certification will be counted.

14. Actually, the electoral count act states in case competing slates of electors, Gov. Prevails

So, even if the legislature is corrupt, it’s the slate approved by the governor that must be accepted by congress.

Yes, congress can still try and rig things. That’s why voting rights legislation is so critical. If states successfully ignore federal law with no repercussions, then the American experiment is well and truly finished.

In the future, if enough corrupt governors appoint fraudulent slates of electors, and there is no legislation at the federal level to stop them, then, as I said, the American experiment is over…

10. In that scenario we have to overwhelm them....

With massive Dem turnout, they simply can't go full on Stalin without causing a massive stink. In my mind, don't look at the 2020 turnout %'s as a model for 2022. I stand by my prediction that without Donnie Dumbass on the ballot, most of the "rarely if ever vote" magats who inflated Republican numbers in 2016 and 2020 will even turn out. Their allegiance is to Donnie Dumbass, not the Republican Party. They dislike them only moderately less than Dems. If the Democratic Party gets its collective shit together, we can turn the tide and overwhelm the "always vote" Republicans, i.e. mostly older, white people. We've done it before.

I wonder how many of those "always vote" Republicans are left after 2 years of covid? That would be an interesting study. Shave a few percentages here and there due to covid mortality and things might be quite different than prior mid terms.
