Adams says Democratic Party has to be 'radically practical' in midterms

The Hill

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) on Sunday said the Democratic Party has to be “radically practical” if it wants to win November’s midterm elections.

Asked by co-anchor Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union” about comments Adams made in June critiquing the party's strategy, the New York City mayor said Democrats should focus on “kitchen table issues” that “everyday” individuals care about in the upcoming midterm races.

“I think we can reset the message and we can put the ship on its right course. We have to be radically practical, radically practical. We need to deal with those kitchen table issues that are important to everyday Americans and New Yorkers,” Adams said.

“I strongly feel that we can't allow social media to dictate what happens. I say it all the time, it’s people on social security we need to be focusing on and they're focusing on healthcare, educating their grandchildren and children, they’re focused on affordable housing and jobs. These are the issues that we are, we must be looking at and ensuring that we are living in a safe city and a safe country,” he added.

The idiotic slogan of "defunding the police" cost the Democrats a good number of house seats in 2020. I liked Maya Wiley but she ran on defund the police and lost to Adams

[...] Maya Wiley, who is viewed as a more progressive candidate, argued in favor of shifting resources away from the police.

“I’m going to take a billion dollars from the New York City Police Department and shift that money to create trauma-informed care in our schools, because when we do that violence goes down and graduation rates go up” she said.

Dianne Morales, also considered one of the more progressive candidates, said that “safety is not synonymous with police.”

“We actually need to recognize that police respond to crime they don’t prevent crime,” she said.

Wiley’s NYPD reform plan: A $1 billion cut and possibly a civilian commissioner

Democratic mayoral candidate Maya Wiley detailed her plan to overhaul the NYPD on Wednesday — a day after she vowed to cut $1 billion from the NYPD.

It’s the first time Wiley has given an exact figure to defund the police — a movement which has garnered support following the killing of George Floyd last year but mayoral candidates have largely avoided explicitly endorsing.

Wiley’s promise to cut the NYPD’s budget was made Tuesday night before an audience of demonstrators who turned out to celebrate after a jury found former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of killing Floyd.

Wiley on Wednesday delivered a speech focused on management before a Zoom audience from the New York Law School, adding she would consider appointing a civilian to lead the nation’s biggest police force.

for candidates like Wiley who favored reallocating police funds, which would've been a more sensible slogan and probably would've gotten more traction.

Because defund the police was such a touchy issue, anyone who seemed to lean in any way towards that notion was going to lose to the opponent who ran against defund the police. The reason being of course is that "defund the police" is, and remains, the dumbest political slogan ever coined.

Hierarchy of needs. People have to buy gas and get to work. They have to buy groceries. People need to be healthy from virus. Most basic needs that affect them every single day. AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME
