In those days the Repukes went out of their way to blame the "gays and the drug-users" for the so-called epidemic. However I don't remember any kind of mask-wearing trend, and I was living in Manhattan at the time. NYC was the early epicenter for AIDS, but even then it was known as a sexually-transmitted disease.

This ad seems to prey on the fear and stupidity of Repukes.

The quest to make you hate. To divide (and conquer). To set one person or voter against another.

It has been so with that group, for a long time. And still is, sadly enough.

I just never assumed head first.

They probably shop at the grocery store like this too, but without the mask.

But there's a tweet that went viral not long ago that expressed anger at the CDC's cutting the quarantine period in half* by asserting that this wouldn't have been the first time the government has left people to die, complete with a photo of a man's jacket from the days of the AIDS crisis.

At least 100k Twitter users liked this tweet.

(Thankfully, at least one of the dozen or so comments I read pointed out that homophobia on the part of the Reagan Administration underpinned their weak response to the AIDS epidemic. But by and large, the comments expressed agreement with the OP.)

*I should clarify that this is not entirely accurate, but is a misinterpretation or muddling up of the guidance the CDC actually issued
