(5,725 posts)It was one thing to pound some sense into rude and obnoxious people with blatant disregard for other people, but things got complicated when the subject drifted elsewhere. "Ev" would kick the living shit out of men who abused horses or threw rocks at birds, but he also tossed a woman's tiny dog into traffic because it wouldn't stop barking. He wouldn't beat up men he considered effeminate, but he would pointedly mock their dress or mannerisms. (And you'd be amazed at what was considered unmanly back then; wristwatches? Seriously?) One strip he would snarl about people with ill-behaved children, the next knock the snot out of someone for being a "race suicider." Speaking of race...well, you can just imagine. In the end, True was just a violent bully looking for any excuse to rain hell upon whomever wandered within his reach.

(33,345 posts)Never knew who Everett True was, except that there was a British music writer in Seattle in the Aughts who wrote a Nirvana biography and that was his Nom de Plume.
History is fascinating.

(33 posts)I wish Ted Cruz would wear a mask. Not so much because of covid, although that would be smart. But because he's butt ugly.

(3,193 posts)There will always be a subset of people who are willing to suffer some discomfort/inconvenience as a sacrifice in the name of a greater good, and there will always be those who will not. The variance is merely a matter of degree from person to person. Some are content with relatively little as long as basic needs are met, while others continue to act on avarice no matter how much they have. Some are generous and will share even that which they value, while others find spiteful satisfaction in depriving others of something they themselves don't value at all.
As a friend of mine is fond of putting it, we're really little more than overclocked apes. It's like that old joke. God says to the angels, "Look, I have made mankind." The angels reply, "You fucked up a perfectly good monkey, is what you did. Look at it. It's got anxiety."
