They left the capitol after shots were fired but if they left and got their good old boys to reconvene and start having a rally outside, they could've decided that they made it that far, they could go at it again. There's no way the Democratic Senators would've been safe without the guard there.

The National Guard was called in to protect the capitol so that the Senate and House could reconvene. And what tops it all off. After the storming of the capitol. After the literal seditious insurrection... the Republicans still did their dog and pony show and put electors into dispute.

These National Guard were up for more than 24 hours, having been called in at the end of their day, and having to stay up throughout the night. You can see daylight filtering in, the capitol likely had been emptied at that point and they were permitted to finally rest.
