(58,785 posts)reactions on both sides of the Cascades agree very often. Actually, were doing the beach thing ourselves, headed south to Florida. Our friends will let us know if the ice storm takes down our power all too often, or wed be planning to admire the icicles and listen for falling trees from in front of a fire.
Enjoy your tsunami.

(537 posts)Ive used grocery delivery since this thing started. I went into the store today on my way home from work. Empty. I mean it was Friday afternoon, before school lets out. But no customers. This is a large grocer with hundreds of stores in my large metropolitan area. As far as items, shelves were not well stocked, wet cat food non-existant and I didn't need any just took a look to grab some if they had any. But the whole store just looked "off" as far as merchandise. I can't quite explain it. It seemed the same feeling I had back in 2008 walking into a Home Depot on a Tuesday afternoon and entire families in there shopping. Something was off, not normal.

Children are back in school so anything that is easily communicable is going around. Doubtless including omicron strain of Covid, but a lot of people are becoming reacquainted with colds this month

frozen pizza area about 2/3 empty
eggs very sparce (but last week I had to go to 6 stores to find any)
canned veggies were sparce (but Goya area was full!)
There was actually (limited) cream cheese and chicken - first time in weeks.
Store was busy due to upcoming frigid weekend (and Pats in the playoffs!).
Mask usage was about 50%, mostly women.

(5,126 posts)I found everything I was looking for this week between 2 stores. The chain stores seem to be hit and miss on some items more frequently than the smaller, locally owned grocery store. Dollar General has had shortages on and off for the last 2 years. The missing items are different all the time. Actually - the shortages there have been for more than 2 years because when they run coupons or store specials, a lot of times the couponers will clean an item out.
I can usually find everything at the local grocery store but prices are a bit higher and I don't usually shop for many special items. There was plenty of milk, OJ, eggs, fresh vegetables, chicken (tho prices were higher than usual), generic frozen potato items were even on sale. They had cream cheese and bagels, plenty of TP at both stores. I didn't pay attention to cat food.

(67,808 posts)Fortunately there are four stores plus a Walmart (ugh)
The only thing out at all of them is Graham Crackers. What's up with that?
Honestly, some sections in some stores look like Russia.
We have two Korean grocery chains stores. One is a bit far, the other is within our local area. Produce and seafood are why I go there. Better session than anyone else. Their meat is more expensive. Groceries are truly for Koreans. Much of it without any English on it at all.

(7,263 posts)The store manager is my ex-bil and he said they were out of lots of things because the weather was peasant today and people panic shopped so as to avoid going out on Saturday or Sunday. He said 95% of the empty shelves were for that reason, not supply chain issues. They did not anticipate the demand so did not order enough quantity.
Plus he says they are now much more precise in their ordering to try and keep only what is needed in the store and anticipate demand. This frees up the warehouses to send more things to other stores. They are still working on improving their shopping models so we still do have occasional empty shelves every week (most ly different every week too) - but not because of actual shortages.

Hortensis
(58,785 posts)still room for more precision with just-in-time stocking. Before Covid, I sometimes wondered if little elves were watching and running out to replenish as soon as I took all but the last two of something on the shelf. Empty was pretty rare.
I'd love to know more about shopping models. Once read that big chains were dealing with conditions in part by offering fewer selections of basically the same things, but that was all. There must be many strategies.

(19,565 posts)These were all removed from my order (except for the cat food, it's just not there to order) this morning. I've adapted what I purchase to meet the situation and get minimal out of stock notices as a result. I still wish I could get my kitties their food, though. They're so pitiful without it, and the store brand pate (all we can get) makes my old toothless man throw up.
My store (H‑E‑B, a Texas major chain) has a banner online saying:
We're currently experiencing supplier issues.
Please consider allowing all substitutions at checkout.
They're trying and often can substitute a similar item.
This isn't about Biden's administration. This is a private sector screwup. It's about how close cut our staffing is in all the layers of our supply chain, and not having proper public health measures being implemented/enforced.

A ton of other things were slightly depleted with some lack of variety/brand.
