General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsApparently my local King Soopers supports conspiracy theories and reichwing
propaganda. I was in there yesterday, and happened to glance at the headlines on the way out. Saw some nonsense about sexual content in books in school libraries, and then saw that it was epoch times, that bizarre rag owned by a Chinese national with Falun Gong. Now, our local fishwrap is not quality journalism, nor is NYT, but they are recognized as somewhat legitimate. To see that qanon-supporting, trump-humping rag on the rack annoyed me no end.
Called Kroger corporate this morning to express my displeasure. When I asked to speak to whoever approved this rag, I was instead transferred to their Home Chef line. Fortunately, I know the manager at my store, and expressed my annoyance and displeasure to her. She was completely unaware of the issue. This could get interesting.
On a side note, it was disheartening to learn that the Shen Yun troupe is part of the organization.

(113,336 posts)clueless of me. I do not ignore the fact that this corporation is giving support and legitimacy to a reichwing propaganda rag. It is NOT acceptable, and they need to know it.

Elaine Chao is on the board. Their CEO makes 909 times what their average worker makes.

(4,575 posts)Kroger has announced it removed the group the Indiana Oath Keepers, a militia group with members who face charges in the Jan. 6 siege of the U.S. Capitol, from its Community Rewards program.
The company was not aware that its giving program was directly funding the organization, because it is based on customer-directed giving that allows thousands of IRS-approved nonprofits to participate, a Kroger statement read.
The Oath Keepers posted their program on their website as a way to fund the organization. One of the leaders of the Oath Keepers, Thomas Caldwell, was arrested Tuesday on four federal charges, including conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States, in connection to the U.S. Capitol insurrection Jan. 6.

(420 posts)I think Jewel is the largest supermarket chain in the Chicago area (subsidiary of SuperValu) . I was in there today and in a hurry and was shocked to see it prominently displayed on the newspaper stand near the checkout area. Thanks folks for the inspiration to say something to the manager the next time I go in.

(65,076 posts)Not SuperValu.
Jewell sold out to American Stores in the early to mid 80s.
A few years later, Albertsons bought American Store.
In the late 90s, they bought Acme, on the east coast.
All one big company, with names differing by region.
You are correct that they are the biggest supermarket chain in the Chicago market. By a lot. I believe#2 is Wal-Mart.
