Despite guidance from health officials, Ron Johnson says vaccinating people during a pandemic 'could be dangerous'

MADISON - U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson suggested this week that vaccinated Americans could be perpetuating the coronavirus pandemic and that distributing vaccines during a pandemic "could be dangerous."

But Johnson also said that he hopes the vaccines play a "key role" in ending the pandemic and that he supports them.

The contradictory comments from Wisconsin's highest-profile Republican come as state health officials prepare to distribute booster vaccine shots to help combat the worst effects of a surge of new COVID-19 cases. The new infections are being fueled by a more transmissible variant of the virus that took hold as vaccine rates stagnated.

In a Tuesday appearance on the John Solomon Reports podcast, Johnson suggested vaccinated Americans could be worsening the pandemic though recent data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services show the unvaccinated are more likely to become infected.

Facing backlash, Ron Johnson defends news conference with five people who said they got side effects from COVID-19 vaccine

This story was republished on Jan. 14, 2022 to make it free for all readers

Facing a backlash that he was presenting misleading medical information, Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson defended his Monday news conference in which five people disclosed what they said were serious side effects from the COVID-19 vaccine.

After detailed and at times emotional statements from participants assembled in the Federal Courthouse in Milwaukee, Johnson said, "You witnessed these stories?"

"Do you think that's reckless and irresponsible?," he added, pushing back at a jibe from Gov. Tony Evers. "I think it's called compassion. I think it's showing concern for your fellow human beings who have stepped up."

'Reckless and irresponsible': Tony Evers blasts Ron Johnson's plans to highlight adverse reactions to COVID vaccines

Wisconsin's governor blasted the state's senior senator Friday for giving a platform to six people who claim they've had adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccines instead of promoting the millions who haven't reported serious side effects and avoided sickness and death.

Democratic Gov. Tony Evers called Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson "reckless and irresponsible" after Johnson announced plans Friday to hold a news conference bringing together people who claim to have had serious health complications in reaction to the vaccine.

"The #COVID19 vaccine is safe and effective and based on years of science and research. Every time you suggest otherwise, you’re jeopardizing the health and safety of the people of our state and our economic recovery," Evers said in a tweet.

Johnson, who has also criticized vaccine mandates and advocated for alternative and unproven treatments for COVID-19, said the Monday event in Milwaukee will allow people from across the country to tell their stories and concerns he said have been “repeatedly ignored” by the medical community.

Ron Johnson says mouthwash can kill COVID-19. Manufacturer of Listerine, medical experts say there's no evidence yet to prove that.

U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson said this week that mouthwash is one way to protect from COVID-19 but the manufacturer of Listerine and medical experts say studies of the idea haven't yet concluded it's a proven antidote.

Johnson in a town hall event on Wednesday said a "standard gargle" of mouthwash "has been proven to kill the coronavirus" or may reduce viral replication to help protect from a serious surge of COVID-19 cases.

"Why not try all these things?" he said, including mouthwash in a list of alternatives to COVID-19 vaccines and face masks, like taking supplements of Vitamin D, Vitamin C and Zinc.

In a statement to the Journal Sentinel, Johnson said he was not suggesting vitamins or mouthwash was a replacement for COVID-19 vaccines.
