the right-wing build a coordinated propaganda machine of hate radio and foxnews and pushed their agenda and talking points and toxic frames and hatred into the mainstream. meanwhile, reagan smiled while telling us that "government was the problem" and any effort to help people was riddled with "waste, graft, and fraud" (except the government was helping rich people, of course), all while republicans perfected the art of the bigoted dog whistle.
it took more than a generation of kids growing up without learning about civics and social responsibility at school. constantly hearing that business leaders' moral duty was to make as much money at possible, and should be admired in direct proportion to their net worth.
donnie was merely the logical outcome of relentless right-wing propaganda. in truth, he really is simply the perfect foxnews viewer. a mean old angry white man whose sum total of political and social knowledge comes directly from foxnews.
the rest of us are finally waking up to the threat to our democracy donnie and his minions present. the shame is that we should have started fighting back to protect our democracy and our social back in the '80s and '90s. instead, we let the right-wing propaganda machine work its way into the american psyche largely without opposition.
