Hey cool--we're having a tsunami!

In case you’re all seeing those news reports, we’re on the WA coast right now and it’s a three foot surge beyond what’s usual, and some pretty impressive waves. The old timers here are pissed they’ve closed the beach for a while. We might go beachcombing later when it recedes.

Edited to add I’m not meaning to be insensitive to those in Tonga who might be impacted by the volcano.

I love them but having grown up on the Gulf and spent beaucopu vacations on the Outer Banks in NC, this is a whole different thing. The beach is actually part of the state highway system. You can drive on it. Summer is one big tailgate party. Off season it’s very quiet and beautiful. And cold as a mfer! My favorite local souvenir shirt is “Ocean Shores—it’s freaking cold!”

Weird fact. This community was started in the 60s by Pat Boone as a vacation playground for LA types. Did I mention it’s freaking cold? 😃 Now it’s a really lovely beach town with a strong retired population and a combination of left and right that love to argue but seem to all love the place.

Spent many, many lovely long weekends with my mom and stepdad on Long Beach Peninsula. Tsunamis were a concern then, and now

Stay warm and safe!

the waves will come into the Salish Sea, but they'll probably dissipate as they do.

Tofino Island? Some place like that.

Yeah, they pretty much curtailed their entire day because of this.

Direct exposure to the ocean at the end of a spit.

Surfing in January at 49 degrees north takes a special kind of drysuit crazy person!
