A burn is a direct insult comeback and usually won't be missed. Especially if you yell "BURN" right after it like Kelso on That 70's Show.



Shade is much more subtle and often more clever, can be nonverbal ( "side-eye" ), and might get missed by the recipient or bystanders depending on how a comment is delivered.
