Woman pushed onto subway tracks, killed by train at Times Square station:

TIMES SQUARE, Manhattan (PIX11) — A woman died Saturday morning after she was pushed onto the subway tracks and struck by a train at the Times Square station, officials said.

The incident happened on the southbound R train platform at Broadway and 42nd Street just after 9:30 a.m., according to the NYPD.

Officers found the woman lying on the tracks, unconscious with trauma to her body, police said. EMS personnel pronounced her dead at the scene, authorities said.

The MTA said in a tweet that a person was struck by a train at the station. Delays were reported on the N, Q, and R lines in both directions as a result.

Two people were taken into custody, according to police.

I have always been paranoid about this. I don't trust people at all.

That poor woman. She was just about to start her day, having no idea that some psycho would come along and end her life while she was in her prime. Fuck this guy. I hope they lock him up forever.

Sewell confirmed that the victim of the fatal attack was Asian, but the first woman the suspect confronted was not. Sewell said police are “investigating all avenues,” and would update on any potential hate crime investigation.

The suspect is known to police and has reports against him, including three other emotionally disturbed incidents. Wilcox said the man was on parole at one point, and did have a parole warrant, which police are looking into.

Mayor Eric Adams said the attack highlighted the need to address mental health in the city. He mentioned Kendra’s Law — a law that requires those who cannot take care of themselves to take medication — during a conference Friday.

“We want to continue to highlight … how imperative it is that people receive the right mental health services, particularly on our subway system,” Adams said.

At most stations in China and in London there's a plastic wall dividing the platform from the tracks with doors that only open when the train pulls up.

How many suicides and incidents like this a year could be prevented by having this?

NYC has 472 stations and platforms range from 480 to 600 feet.

plexiglass according to google costs about $10 per sq. ft but can cost $30 due to current demand. So let's assume with install costs plus the electronics/controls/hardware to operate the doors that is is $60/sq ft.

So: 472 x 600ft long x 10 feet tall (not sure the needed height, just a guess, but needs to be tall enough to prevent anyone climbing over to commit suicide) x $60/sq.ft = about $170 million to outfit all the stations.

...bc of that small % percentage I either stand away from the edge, or lean against the side of the steel girders facing away from the tracks.
